1 Being Bold For Christ Acts 4:1-22

2 Bold for Christ By knowing persecution is going to come
By being filled with the Holy Spirit By proclaiming Jesus as the only way of salvation By spending time with Christ By obeying God rather than men By testifying to what we know about Jesus Christ

3 Acts 4:1-22 4:1 – “And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of temple and the Sadducees cam upon them,” 4:2 – “greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.” 4:3 – “And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.”

4 Acts 4:1-22 4:4 – “But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.” 4:5 – “On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem,” 4:6 – “with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family.”

5 Acts 4:1-22 4:7 – “And when they had set them in the midst, they enquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” 4:8 – “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders,” 4:9 – “if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means the man has been healed,”

6 Acts 4:1-22 4:10 – “let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised form the dead – by him this man is standing before you well.” 4:11 – “This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.” 4:12 – “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

7 Acts 4:1-22 4:13 – “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter an John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized they had been with Jesus.” 4:14 – “But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.” 4:15 – “But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another,”

8 Acts 4:1-22 4:16 – “saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.” 4:17 – “But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” 4:18 – “So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.”

9 Acts 4:1-22 4:19 – “But Peter and John answered them, “whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge,” 4:20 – “for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” 4:21 – “And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened.” 4:22 – “For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.”

Verses 1-7, 17-18 First persecution of the church Persecution came from religious authorities Persecution came because Jesus Christ was being preached Expect opposition to come 2nd Timothy 3:12 John 15:50

Verses 8-10 Peter faces the religious leaders boldly Holy Spirit Baptism of the Holy Spirit Indwelling of the Holy Spirit Filling of the Holy Spirit Understand your OWN weakness

12 Being Bold for Christ – By Proclaiming One Way of Salvation
Verses 11-12 Verse 11 quoted from Psalm 118:22 Peter and John were proclaiming the truth of God’s word Boldness comes from God’s word Speak the truth

Verses 13-14 Religious leaders were astonished Peter and John were uneducated and common Peter and John were bold because they had been with Christ Spend time with Christ – How much time have you spent with Christ last year? Last week? Yesterday?

14 Being Bold for Christ – By Obeying God Rather Than Men
Verses 15-19 Peter and John continue to speak of Christ even after being ordered not to Christians are to submit to the governing authorities – 1st Peter 2, Romans 13 Christians ONLY disobey governing authorities when it directly contradicts the Word of God Who do you listen to and obey?

15 Being Bold for Christ – By Testifying to What You Know About Christ
Verses 20-22 Peter and John had spent 3 years with Jesus We proclaim what we know about Christ Jesus’ death and resurrection Jesus as the only way of salvation The gospel and our testimony The change Jesus made in our lives The peace and joy we have because of forgiveness The purpose and meaning we have in life You have been called to the witness stand

16 Being Bold for Christ – Conclusion
By knowing persecution is going to come By being filled with the Holy Spirit By proclaiming Jesus as the only way of salvation By spending time with Christ By obeying God rather than men By testifying to what we know about Jesus Christ

Result of being bold for Christ – People coming to know Christ - v believed People praising God – v. 21 Jesus Christ was bold enough to endure the cross for us Are you willing to STAND UP FOR JESUS
