Energy Waves Kim Lachler Updated 2015 NCES: 6.P.1.1
2
Energy Waves Is a disturbance that transmits energy through matter or empty space. Is a disturbance that transmits energy through matter or empty space.
3
Energy Waves Carries the energy away from the source The material through which the wave travel does not travel
4
Types of waves There are 2 different types of energy waves –Mechanical Waves –Electromagnetic Waves
5
Types of waves Mechanical waves Mechanical waves waves that need a medium to travel –Medium is a substance – solid liquid gas solid liquid gas Energy passed from one particle to another Most waves including sound waves Is there sound in space? No, there is no medium
6
Types of waves Electromagnetic waves –They don’t use a medium to travel They can go through mediums Light waves; including visible, microwave, radio, x ray
7
Particle Movement The particles in the medium can vibrate in 2 different ways: –Transversal –Longitudinal
8
Particle Movement Transverse waves Transverse waves –particles vibrate perpendicular (up and down) to the energy –electromagnetic waves (light waves) are transverse waves even though they do not need particles to travel.
9
Particle Movement Transverse waves high points – crest low points – trough rest position – middle crest trough Rest position
10
Particle Movement Longitudinal waves Longitudinal waves –particles vibrate back and forth in the same direction to the energy –sound waves
11
Particle Movement Longitudinal waves –compression – when pushed together –rarefaction – when pulled apart. compression rarefraction
