Independence Puerto Rico has always tried to gain independence for the island. The Spanish were the first to find and conquer Puerto Rico, but the Puerto Ricans revolted against and overthrew them. America now owns Puerto Rico, but it is not considered part of the U.S.

Events 1493 - Christopher Columbus discovers the island on his second journey to the New World. 1508 - Spanish colonization begins. 1513 - African slaves are introduced to the island. 1873 - The Spanish Constitutional Monarchy is replaced by a republican government, and slavery is also abolished. 1902 - U.S. declares Puerto Rico as part of it’s territory. Throughout history, many hurricanes hit the island.

Climate Puerto Rico has a tropical marine (meaning the temperature is influenced by the ocean) and usually mild climate. There is little temperature variation. The hurricane season is between June and November. The normal temp is around 82°F
