Known as the “Third Force” of Psychology, Humanistic Psychology is the theory that every person has a strong desire to reach their full potential, which is also referred to as “Self- Actualization.” Can you name the other two “Forces” of psychology?

Hierarchy of Needs The Hierarchy of Needs is the theory that healthy human beings have Basic needs (Physiological and Safety) that must be met before Psychological (Social and Esteem) and Self-fulfillment needs may be met.

Physiological Air, Food, Water Shelter & Clothing Safety Physical Security Financial Teacher Application- Ensure all students have received daily meals and water. Students should have access to proper clothing and shelter. Teacher Application- Safety should be a priority for every student. If there are signs of possible abuse, neglect or harassment at home, adults must report it to the proper authorities.

Social Belongingness Love & Intimate Relationships Friends and Family Teacher Application- Children have a need to feel love and affection and they must be able to express it to other students, teachers and families. Relationships must be created and nurtured to feel a sense of belonging. Teachers can encourage this by creating trusting relationships with their students by hand shakes, compliments, and involvement in the students’ lives. Esteem Self-respect and respect of others Self-confidence and value Teacher Application- Teachers need to ensure that students’ ideals are valued and respected. Positive reinforcement can build one’s esteem. Bullying is a way that students’ may lose their sense of self-value.
