Human Brain The human brain has a range of different parts
You are required to know the function of, and be able to label the: Cerebrum Cerebellum Brain stem Spinal cord Brain Function Video
3
Human Brain – Brain Stem
Oldest part of the brain “Reptilian brain” Controls automatic functions like breathing, and heart rate Controls hunger and thirst Controls simple emotions like happiness and sadness
4
Human Brain - Cerebrum Contains a range of different lobes
Processes sensory information from our eyes and skin etc. Object recognition Higher emotions Language
5
Human Brain - Cerebellum
Back of the brain Below the cerebrum Controls the coordination of our body Walking, talking, standing and dancing etc. So you don’t fall over
6
Spinal Cord The spinal cord makes up the central nervous system with the brain It links the brain with the peripheral nervous system It receives all the information from the sensory neurons It relays information from the brain to the motor neurons
7
Neurons and Synapses Sensory and motor neurons pass information around the body Dendrites receive information from lots of other neurons
8
Neurons and Synapses The message that is received by the dendrites is converted into an electrical impulse The axon transmits the electrical impulse very fast The myelin sheath keeps the message inside the axon
9
Neurons and Synapses When the electrical signal gets to the end of the axon it stops The synaptic terminals are not connected to another neuron They produce a chemical message called a neurotransmitter
10
Neurons and Synapses The neurotransmitters travel across the synapse, the gap between neurons They are received by the dendrites of the next neuron The message is converted to an electrical impulse and the message continues
