Def: Persons, places, things, or ideas/concepts Common n.: plain nouns you hear all the time house Proper n.: nouns with specific names (capitalized) The White House Create a column. List all the proper nouns you can think of that start with the letter I assign you. Use a dictionary! (CAPITALIZE THESE) Now, for each proper noun, give the corresponding common noun! (Don’t capitalize these) E.g. White House house, place, capital,

Concrete n.: A noun you can touch/feel/see (person, place, thing) Hugs, kisses, caresses, food Abstract n.: A noun you CAN’T touch/feel/etc. (ideas, concepts, topics) Love List as many abstract nouns as possible For each abstract noun, list as many CONCRETE nouns that you think of when you think of that topic. E.g. Love hugs, kisses, caresses, food

Collective n.: singular nouns that refer to groups Even though they refer to many things, a collective noun is only considered one thing. E.g. The singular word “team” refers to many players, “Hawaii” refers to several islands, “committee” refers to several people who make a decision, etc. List as many individual animals as you possibly can think of… Can you think of the collective noun for each animal? E.g., cat clowder (group of cats)
