Facebook Online social networking site. Launched on February 2004 and founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Originally called “thefacebook.com.” Was limited by the founders to Harvard students.

Photo Application The most popular feature among users. Users are able to upload albums of photos, tag friends and comment on photos. A 2014 study showed that an estimated 350 million photos are uploaded to Facebook daily.

Tagging Used to show who is in the photo. Used to mention another user in a status update. Facial recognition has been added to make photo tagging more user-friendly through the implementation of “Tag Suggest”.

Facial Recognition A type of biometric software application that can identify a specific individual in a digital image by analyzing and comparing patterns. Was initially used for security purposes ONLY. Facial Recognition software use “Faceprints” to distinguish between different people.

3d modeling Uses unique features of the face to identify the subject. The facial recognition system will put the unique facial areas together until it finds a proper match from which it will make a 2D image.

DeepFace Attempt at increasing the accuracy. Uses Deep Learning; software learns, in a very real sense, to recognize patterns in digital representations of sounds, images, and other data. Currently a research project and Facebook’s research team will present their work at a conference in June 2014.
