A Nation Comes Apart - Economic Differences: - early 1800s the North & South had different economies due to environmental factors Northern states - turn to industry with the invention of the steam engine & factory system North – the rocky soil & cold climate meant farming could not be used as a main source of income Write

Southern Economy tobacco, cotton, corn, rice, & indigo were the first cash crops for the South The invention of the cotton gin allowed cotton to become the primary cash crop Slavery was a key component for the success of large scale crop production.
