6 General Provides just enough light to see everything in the room
Also known as background or ambient lighting Direct Light that shines on specific areas Indirect Reflected off ceilings and walls More diffused, softer than direct light

9 Accent Light aimed directly on a specific object to create a dramatic effect Ex: Used to highlight a special painting

Ex: Adjustable floor lamp used for needlepoint Ex: Lighting over a kitchen island to help when cooking Ex: Desk lamp illumining a desk top for writing

11 Terminology Fluorescent = gas-discharge light that uses electricity to excite mercury vapor. Last longer than incandescent bulbs Color of light varies by changing the tubes coating: Cool-white Very efficient, blends well with sunlight, makes colors look good Warm-white Very cost efficient, but is not flattering to many colors

New type of light that is very energy efficient Larger than a regular incandescent bulb that screws into a regular light bulb socket Luminous Ceiling Panels May cover all or part of a ceiling Made of plastic panels that cover recessed fluorescent lights

15 Incandescent Makes light by heating a metal filament wire to a high temperature until it glows Regular light bulb Light tends to be warm and flattering
