What are 5 ways you use energy?
Brainstorm! What are 5 ways you use energy?
4
Sources of Energy Can you identify the 9 different sources of energy depicted in this drawing?
5
Energy Use in Canada
6
Energy Use in Canada Fossil Fuels 70% Nuclear 19% Hydro 9% Wind 0.5%
Coal 52% Natural Gas 15% Oil 3% Nuclear 19% Hydro 9% Wind % Solar % Geothermal % Tidal %
7
There are 3 good reasons, and 1 not so good reason, why Canadians use a great deal of energy. What do you think they are?
8
We live in a northern climate with cold temperatures… brrr!
We have a small population spread very thinly over a huge land mass, so… Our advanced industry uses lots of energy so that we can sell things to other countries. Energy is cheap in Canada.
10
FOSSIL FUELS Fossil fuels include coal, oil, and natural gas…
They were formed from the remains of plants and animals. Found in sedimentary (soft) rock. Can be found around Canada.
11
How is coal formed?
14
Why is coal so important to the Canadian economy?
15
EVERY WEEK TO 10 DAYS, CHINA OPENS A NEW COAL-BURNING POWER PLANT.
China now uses more coal than the United States, Europe, and Japan combined.
16
How do you make energy from this stuff?
18
NON-RENEWABLE E ENERGY SOURCES
Energy supplies that are limited and cannot be replaced once they are used up. Oil Natural Gas Coal
19
RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
Energy supplies that can be replaced after they are consumed. Solar Power Wind Power
20
CONVENTIONAL ENERGY SOURCES
These are the more common energy sources found in Canada. Flowing water Fossil fuels Uranium
21
ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES
Energy sources that haven’t been around for a long time… they’re ‘newer’ ideas. Solar, wind, tidal, biomass, geothermal, hydrogen
22
Nuclear Energy Where is the nearest nuclear power plant in Ontario?
23
Darlington Nuclear, 70 km East of Toronto
24
How can you spot a nuclear power plant?
25
Which Energy Source DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST for Ontario?
Hydroelectricity? Nuclear Energy? Wind Energy? Biomass Energy? Geothermal Energy?
