10.Be polite, helpful, pleasant.

9. Act professionally in all aspects of your behavior. You are representing the university; be mindful of your comments and actions.

8. Arrive promptly. Stay until the next tutor arrives, but don’t be late for class.

7. Wear your nametag so that a student can easily identify you. When a student arrives, acknowledge the student’s arrival even if you are working with another student.

5. Hours of Operation: JH104: 8 – 5, T – R; 10 – 2, F JH112: 10 – 12, M – F; 6 – 9,S Although you were assigned to a room on the schedule, tutors should openly communicate and share duties. Be aware of number of students in each room. Tutors should periodically check on the number of students in the other room. If the other tutor is busy, step in to help.

4. If you can’t answer a student’s question: Check examples in the book or student’s notes. Remind students that their classroom notes and book are learning resources. Ask the other tutor to help. Ask a math professor.

3. You are not a math “wizard”; you are a math tutor. Give the student some credit for knowing how to do math on their own. Encourage a student to use classroom notes and books as a resource. Help a student to do a problem using her or his way. You may offer an alternative method which will sometimes be welcome, sometimes not.

2. Be mindful of your behavior and comments with all students. Be especially mindful of your comments and behaviors to students of the opposite gender. Comments and gestures can be easily misinterpreted. If you feel uncomfortable working with a particular student, ask another tutor to help that student.
