What is a research paper anyway?

A research paper is an investigative, written report based upon information compiled from a variety of resources.

Some possible resources for gathering information include both print and nonprint: Encyclopedias Dictionaries Reference books Atlases Almanacs Journals Magazines Newspapers Internet Subscription Services (Alabama Virtual Library)

You will learn valuable research skills: Find information and evaluate it for quality. Use the Alabama Virtual Library (AVL). Write source cards. Summarize information. Avoid plagiarism. Write note cards. Write an outline. Make in-text citations. Compile a Works Cited page.

You will find that doing research requires a logical process: Locating information Writing source cards Summarizing information on note cards Organizing information into an outline Writing the first draft with in-text citations Evaluating the first draft Revising and editing the outline and first draft Writing the final draft Compiling a Works Cited page

Your paper will have information from these required sources: One encyclopedia (print or online) One print source *not encyclopedia One AVL reference database One Internet source Your choice

Remember, research is a process! Follow all directions carefully. Consult your notes for examples. Be an investigator of facts. Organize your materials. Don’t fall behind on deadlines! Stay focused and work hard.
