The Game of Life! Unit Presentation Kathleen Kelemen

Unit Summary In this unit, there will be a group between two and four students. The group plans on living together after high school. The student will also choose a career path to follow which will have an average salary. The assignment is to find a house to live in, find a car for each member of the group, and figure out how much the bills will cost. This includes electricity, and water bills. I will give the students certain equations to use to figure out some amounts which they will need to solve. The group will then need to figure out if they will be able to pay all the bills for the cars and the house with their chosen career salary. They will then present why or why not they were able to.

Target Content Standards 5.0 Students solve multistep problems, including word problems, involving linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each step. 15.0 Students apply algebraic techniques to solve rate problems, work problems, and percent mixture problems.

Unit Objectives Students will gather, analyze, and organize information about what it will take to own a home and pay for bills. Each student will choose a career path and see how much money (annually) they will be receiving from that career. The student will also choose a desired car to take them to and from work. They will then choose groups and find a house that will fit not only all of the group members but also all of their wants. Each group member will gather information about bills they will need to pay for the house and the car. Groups will analyze the gathered information from each group member and decide what information is the most useful. They will then apply the information to the given teacher equations which will solve if the student will be able to pay for everything they have chosen with their salaries.

Curriculum-Framing Questions Essential Question – How can I get what I need? Unit Questions – How will knowing algebra help me figure out how much I will need to buy living essentials? Content Questions – If I want to buy this house, and have a certain amount for the down payment, how much will I need to make to keep up with the monthly payments?

Gauging Student Needs Assessment Tapping Prior Knowledge Ask students a few questions about households for them to answer Goals The following assessment results will act as an indicator to gauge the prior knowledge of living in a household.

Why Projects? Project-based learning allows the students to grasp the main concept by exploring and experimenting with different ideas. This allows students to be creative and different types of questions to understand the information. We will also be using different types of technology to help with these projects. Students will be asked to go online to acquire needed information for the project. They will also be using many computer programs like Microsoft Word or Microsoft PowerPoint to put their projects together. This allows for originality and creativity to come alive in the students.

Project Summary A teacher made manual will give the directions to the project and equations to be used throughout. Students will gather and analyze information as a group to be used in the project Students will understand what it takes to live after high school and how to use algebra to figure it out.
