William Fulbright of Arkansas Administered overseas by U.S. Embassies and bi- national Fulbright Commissions and Foundations About the Fulbright Program To increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and the people of other countries through international educational exchange programs

4 us.fulbrightonline.org Fulbright U.S. Student Program Two Types of Grants Research/Study Grant ~1,000 awards 8-12 months Independent research, study, or creative and performing arts projects abroad English Teaching Assistantships: ~600 awards 8-12 months 20-30 hours a week helping to teach English and U.S. culture in the classroom Remaining time spent on a community-focused project

Sept. 16

6 us.fulbrightonline.org Starting the Application The notification is made online by beginning the application process. http://us.fulbrightonline.org/home.html You need to complete the general information and get so far as to choosing either Dean Douglas (grad) or Dean Hamel (undergrad) as your FPA. Do not just send us an email stating you are interested in applying.

7 us.fulbrightonline.org Eligibility U.S. Citizenship Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (no PhDs) by the start of the grant Proficiency in written & spoken language of host country (varies by country)

8 us.fulbrightonline.org General Qualifications High level of academic and/or professional achievement A well-developed project Demonstrated leadership ability Sufficient language proficiency (varies by country) Focus on increasing mutual understanding through community engagement Research/Study Grants

9 us.fulbrightonline.org English Teaching Assistantship Offered in 66 countries; Last year 750 people served as ETAs Help improve foreign students understanding of English language & U.S. culture Assistant teacher 20-30 hrs/wk K-12 or university/college Side project emphasizing community engagement Often, less language proficiency required at application, but plans to learn language helpful

11 us.fulbrightonline.org Critical Language Enhancement Award Provides additional funding for language study for eligible Fulbright Grantees who intend to use a critical language for their project Goal to cultivate higher levels of language proficiency prior to, during and beyond the regular Fulbright grant period Application for CLEA is made in conjunction with the Fulbright Program application

14 us.fulbrightonline.org Statement of Grant Purpose (Full Grants) Two page essay that answers the questions: what, where, how, when, and why –With whom do you propose to work? –What do you propose to do? What is exciting, new, unique about your project. What contribution will that project make to the Fulbright objective of promoting cross-cultural interaction and mutual understanding. –When will you carry out your study or research? Include a timeline –Where do you propose to conduct your study or research? Why is it important to go abroad to carry out your project? –Why do you want to do it? What is important or significant about your project? –How will you carry out your work? Discuss methodology and goals. How will it help further your academic or professional development? Demonstrates knowledge of the field of study Demonstrates awareness of needs in host country Any potential concern about project feasibility or your ability should be addressed directly

15 us.fulbrightonline.org Potential Feasibility Issues How will the culture and politics of the host country impact your work If employing methodological techniques such as extensive interviewing and the use of questionnaires, how will you locate your subjects? Is your language facility adequate? If not, how will you accomplish your work?

16 us.fulbrightonline.org Statement of Grant Purpose (ETA Grant) One page essay that explains how you will reach your goals as an English Teaching Assistant, and why you would like to be an English Teaching Assistant –What are your qualifications and what experiences you have had that relate to the overseas assignment –How do you expect to benefit from the assignment and what will you make of the experience upon your return Description of a small, supplemental research project (focused on community involvement) –Should not be location-specific Demonstrates sincere desire to teach English to non- native speakers
