Key Text Luke 19:20 NKJV “ H e said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered and said, ‘The Christ of God.’ ”

Who Is Jesus Christ? Quick Look 1. The Son of God (Luke 1:31-35) 2. The Son of Man (Luke 5:24) 3. The Christ of God (Luke 9:18-20)

Who Is Jesus Christ? Initial Words J esus could well earn the name of the best teacher, a revolutionary, a leader par excellence, and a psychologist. He was all these and so much more. None of these comes near to answering His all-important question: “ ‘Who do you say that I am?’ ” It is a question that demands an answer, and on that answer the destiny of humanity hinges.

Who Is Jesus Christ? 1. The Son of God Luke 1:31-35 NKJV “ ‘ Y ou will...bring forth a Son, and...call His name Jesus...the Son of the Highest.... The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you... the the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.’ ”

1. The Son of God Reaction to Jesus A ll through the Gospels and the New Testament incredible claims are made about who Jesus was. These claims—that He is God, that He is our Redeemer, that He alone is the way to eternal life—demand our attention because they have eternal consequences for every human being.

1. The Son of God Reaction to Jesus “Son of man” and “Son of God” are two names used in the Gospels to describe who Jesus is. The first indicates God incarnate; the second points to His divinity as the second Person of the Godhead. Together, the two phrases invite us to ponder the miracle of Jesus Christ: God who is both divine and human.

1. The Son of God Reaction to Jesus In Luke 1:31, 32, the angel links the name “Jesus” with the “Son of the Highest” to whom the “Lord God will give” the throne of David (NKJV). Jesus is the Son of God. He is also the Christ, the Messiah, who shall restore David’s throne, in that He will ultimately defeat Satan’s attempt to usurp the throne of God Himself.

1. The Son of God Reaction to Jesus The title “Son of God” not only affirms Christ’s position in the Godhead but also reveals the close and intimate relationship that Jesus had with God the Father while Jesus was on earth. Through His divinity Jesus maintained the closest possible ties to the Father.

Who Is Jesus Christ? 2. The Son of Man Luke 5:24 NKJV “ ‘ B ut that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins’— He said to the man who was paralyzed, ‘...rise, take up your bed, and go to your house.’ ”

2. The Son of Man Favorite Self-designation “ J esus says, ‘My Father which is in heaven,’ as reminding His disciples that while by His humanity He is linked with them, a sharer in their trials, and sympathizing with them in their sufferings, by His divinity He is connected with the throne of the Infinite.” —The Desire of Ages 442.

2. The Son of Man Insights 1. The title identifies Him as a human (7:34), with no worldly address or security (9:58). 2. The title asserts Christ’s divine nature and status: for the “ ‘Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath’ ” (6:5, NKJV). Therefore, He is also the Creator, with the power to forgive sins (5:24).

2. The Son of Man Insights 3. To accomplish this redemptive mission ordained by the Godhead before the foundations of the world (Eph. 1:3–5), the Son of man came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10). But redemption itself cannot be completed until “ ‘the Son of Man... be rejected...and be killed, and be raised the third day’ ” (9:22).

2. The Son of Man Insights This self-awareness of the Son of man about the path He had to tread, and the price He had to pay for the Redemption of humankind from sin, reveals not only the divine origin of the plan of Redemption but also Christ’s submission in His humanity to that plan.

2. The Son of Man Insights 4. His suffering: foreknowledge of the Cross (18:31–33); betrayal (9:44); death (22:22); Crucifixion and Resur- rection (24:7); and His role as the Mediator before the Father (12:8). 5. Returns to earth to reward His saints and to wrap up the great controversy (9:26; 12:4; 17:24, 26, 30; 21:36; 22:69).

Who Is Jesus Christ? 3. The Christ of God Luke 9:18-20 NKJV “ A nd...He asked them..., ‘Who do the crowds say that I am?’ So they answered..., ‘John the Baptist,... Elijah,...one of the prophets has risen again.’ He said..., ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Petered answered...‘The Christ of God.’ ”

3. The Christ of God “Anointed One” “ ‘ W ho do you say that I am?’ ” (9:20). Many different answers were given. A great teacher. A profound ethicist. An embodiment of truth. An edifice of self-sacrifice. A fearless prophet. A social reformer. A great model. But no answer short of the confession that the original question drew from the lips of Peter will do.

“Anointed One” William Barclay, The Gospel of Matthew 2:161 “We might know every verdict...on Jesus; we might know every Christo- logy...ever thought out; we might be able to give a competent summary of the teaching about Jesus of every great thinker and theologian—and still not be Christians. Christianity never consists in knowing about Jesus; it always consists in knowing Jesus.”

Final Words EGW SDA Bible Comm 5:1128, 1129 “ A void every question in relation to the humanity of Christ which is liable to be misunderstood.... It is a mystery that is left unexplained to mortals that Christ could be tempted in all points like as we are, and yet be without sin. The incarnation of Christ has ever been, and will ever remain, a mystery.”
