3 Steinbeck’s Formative Years Born 1902 in Salinas, California Parents upper-middle class family, aspiring to a higher “place” Worked summers in various manual jobs, thus bringing him into contact with migrant laborers at an early age

4 Steinbeck’s Formative Years Entered Stanford University in the fall of 1919 Attended sporadically for several semesters Formed several important friendships Left permanently in 1925

5 Family Life Married three times Later in life spent most of his time on the East Coast (New York) Emotionally his “home” was California; specifically the Monterey / Salinas area Fairly private man

6 Important Works Tortilla Flat (1935)  Depicts itinerant laborers as heroic “pasianos” Of Mice and Men (1937)  Novella originally titled “Something that Happened” The Grapes of Wrath (1939)  Won Pulitzer Prize, et.al East of Eden (1952) Numerous other novels, a few screenplays, non- fiction, etc.
