O F M ICE AND M EN. Of Mice and Men is a novella written by John Steinbeck, published in 1937. It tells the story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two migrant ranch workers who’s relationship was more than partners at works but they were best friends and usually spend their time together. This story is about George and Lennie’s ambition of owning their own ranch, and all the obstacles that stand in the way so they can live their dream, by revealing the nature of dreams, friendship, violence, loneliness, and sacrifice.

O F M ICE AND M EN. Lennie’s character is huge, strong, and in many ways, the opposite of George’s character. Lennie’s personality is like a child. He is innocent and mentally handicapped with no ability to understand abstracts concepts or ideas, with a very high learning disability, and without understanding between wrong and right. Lennie’s strength combined with his lack of intelligence and conscience make him dangerous, that’s why the society as a whole usually disapproved Lennie and judge him in a hard way.

O F M ICE AND M EN. The way the people judge Lennie is not only showed on John Steinbeck’s novella, but it is usually showed in daily life, and not just on books. This case of discrimination towards handicapped people or people with learning disabilities is common in our society. By the time Steinbeck wrote his novella, Lennie’s case was not usually common in society, and the people did not gave importance to it, and that’s why children with learning disabilities grew up with no understanding abilities and without a good education; in this case, Lennie’s life.

O F M ICE AND M EN. Many people have learning disabilities, that does not means that some people are better than others. Thanks to the development of education, children of every ages can now improve their abilities while learning, and helping them for their success on life.

O F M ICE AND M EN. One of many important programs that helps handicapped children is The Help Group. This program is the largest, most innovative and comprehensive nonprofit in the United States serving children with special needs related to autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, ADHD, developmental delays, abuse, and emotional problems. The Help Group offer pre- K through high school programs for more than 1,550 students. And more than 980 professional staff members. The Help Group mission is to create different programs that helps children to improve their learning ability. And also gives the children many opportunities to success in their lives. What sort of programs are in place for Lennie’s learning disability in 2015 that would have helped him in school, and in the workforce?

O F M ICE AND M EN.  Advanced LA Transitioning Teens & Young Adults  Residential Services  After school & Weekend Programs  Kids Like Me Campus  Vocational Services  Mental Health & Clinical Programs  Family Centered Support Programs The Help Group have many different programs and services. For example:

O F M ICE AND M EN. On our point of view, we think that there are many programs that can help disabled children by teaching them properly and preparing them for the real world in order for them to be successful in their future. Is enough being done today to prepare students with special needs to make it in the real world?

O F M ICE AND M EN. The book of Mice and Men that was published in the 1937 is still relevant in 2015 because it shows the daily problems, and obstacles that people face in their daily lives, just like Lennie and George faced in the book. The societal problems that some of the characters faced in the novella that we still face today is the discrimination against people in general. Why is Of Mice and Men a book published in 1937, still relevant in 2015? What societal problems were the characters of the novella facing that we still face today?

O F M ICE AND M EN. Some of the things we can do to help these problems are: Aware people before the problem get worst To help the people by giving them the correct attention The things we can learn from the novel that we can apply to our lives are that everybody has the ability to learn, but everybody doesn’t learn on the same pace, however that doesn’t mean that they are better than the others. What can we do about those problems? What can we learn from John Steinbeck’s novel, and how can it be applied to our lives?

O F M ICE AND M EN. The value that Of Mice And Men offer to the modern reader is that don’t judge people by their outside, or the way they act. What value does Of Mice And Men offer to the modern reader?
