Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community? King discusses what African-Americans should do with their new freedoms. He concludes that a new equality of opportunity is required. He states that the U.S. government should act directly to benefit individuals to remedy poverty. HBCUs can produce sufficient science and technology graduates to meet the emerging challenges of a global society. Federal agencies are focusing science technology, engineers and math 3

Strategic Thinking and Planning Booker T. Washington moved away from the confrontational approaches embraced by his predecessor in the African American community (Frederick Douglass). Washington developed strong working relations with key individuals to secure funding necessary to develop the University. The confrontational approach was not advantageous. Many northern philanthropists gave to Tuskegee because Washington had a clear vision for how the school could help Southern blacks make a better life for themselves. 4
