Key Terms/Definitions Culture- “that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society” –Sir Edward Burnett Tylor (1871) Cultural diversity- the appreciation of differences of a group of people based on their racial or ethnic backgrounds, language, dress and traditions Cultural awareness-how one’s own personal identity, values and beliefs influence his/her perceptions and relationships with others Cultural sensitivity- ability to display trust, respect and appropriateness in interpersonal relationships with others

10. Implications for Nurse Educators The “face of healthcare” as we know it is/has changed. Nursing programs and nurse educators must be diligent in meeting the needs of the diverse student bodies they serve. They also must be proactive in developing curriculums that will ultimately produce culturally competent clinicians that are able to deliver culturally congruent health care.

11. Implications for Nursing Practice Nurse educators (classroom /clinical) are role models for the students they teach. The interactions between educator and student will serve as the foundation for interactions between nurse-client and ultimately influence the future of nursing.
