2. Objectives Students will:
Identify action verbs and name their direct objects.

3. Rules
Some sentences express a complete thought with only a subject and an action verb.
The ship sailed.
In other sentences a direct object is used with the action verb.
The captain steers the big ship.

4. Rules
Direct Object
It is a word in the predicate that receives the action of the word.
A direct object answers the question “whom” or “what” after the verb.
It can be a noun or pronoun (it takes the place of the noun)
Sometimes a sentence does not have a direct object.
For example:
The ship sailed.

April 14 My family and I took a trip on a whale-watching boat. Everyone searched the ocean for whales. At first we saw only other boats. Then a little girl pointed. Amazingly, the huge graceful creatures approached our ship. Then they dived. The ocean water covered their shiny bodies. They disappeared. Tears filled my eyes.
