9 Class Discussion What feelings must Brian have felt when he finally found the pack? What are the objects Brian finds in the survival pack? What is the usefulness of each object?

10 Writing Task Write a diary entry imagining you are Brian on the day he retrieves the survival pack. Remember to focus on his feelings and thoughts.

11 Swap your writing with the person sitting in front of you.
Peer Assessment Swap your writing with the person sitting in front of you. Write two stars about their diary (things they did well) Write one wish (something to improve on) Remember to be specific!

15 Class Discussion What did you think of the ending of the novel? Are you disappointed/happy/sad/surprised? Why? Other editions of Hatchet don’t include the epilogue. Why do you think Paulsen chose to include it in this version? Do you think the story works better with or without it? Why?

16 Paired Activity Write a conversation between Brian and his group of friends on his first day back at school. Write it in script format.
