Picasso Pablo Picasso – Spanish painter and sculptor Founder of “Cubism” period Created versions of past masters (like Velasquez) in his own style Often created abstract art and mixed other styles Very successful in his lifetime: one painting sold for $104 million and another for $95 million Guernica, 1937 Chicago Picasso, 1967 The Musicians, 1925

Kandinsky Vasily Kandinsky - Russian Lived in Germany later, and then Paris for most of his life He was originally a lawyer and law teacher He slowly transformed his paintings into the first abstract art – which shows the inner feelings of the human soul, not the outside Extremes of geometric abstraction Composition VII – 1913 Black and Violet 1923 Oil on canvas

O’Keefe Georgia O’Keefe American, many paintings from New Mexico, an active artist and art teacher Motifs include floral, animal bones, desert landscapes, and female forms in BOLD colors Characteristic style was strong lines and curvilinear, very earthy and natural Extremely successful in lifetime, in National Women’s Hall of Fame Red Poppy, 1927 Ram’s Head, White Hollyhock 1935

Jackson Pollock American from Western U.S. Action Painting: placed canvas on the floor or the wall and poured and dripped paint from a can Instead of using brushes he used `sticks, trowels or knives', sometimes making a mixture of `sand, broken glass or other foreign matter' All-over style of painting with no focal point or subject, so it doesn’t have any composition in terms of relations among parts Influenced by Indian Sandpainters Lavender Mist, No. 1, 1950 Full Fathom Five, No. 8, 1949

Andy Warhol American painter, filmmaker, publisher, actor, and cultural icon In the 1960’s he made paintings of famous American products –soup cans, coca-cola He wanted to mass-produce art, like America mass-produced consumer goods Worked out of “The Factory” in New York and LA, known for its wild parties and interesting workers –sex, drugs, rock n’ roll were common in the workplace Well known for his lifestyle and his talent

Dali Salvador Dali – Spanish painter (from Catalan, near France) Master of “surrealist” style and follower of the Dada movement Bizarre, very imaginative, dreamlike images, painted with excellent skill, similar to great masters (who influenced him) Very eccentric personality, did unusual things to draw attention Famous Quote: “To be great is to be misunderstood” The Persistence of Memory, 1931 Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bumblebee around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening, 1944 The Hallucinogenic Toreador 1970
