2  Fires cause more deaths than any other type of disaster  The leading Causes of Home fires  Careless cooking habits  Cigarette smoking  Improperly uses or poorly maintained heating devices  Improper storage of materials that are flammable  Overloaded or damaged electrical circuits or wiring

3  Smoke detectors  Keep Stoves and ovens clean  Install fie extinguishers – kitchen, near exits  No smoking in bed-ashtrays completely cold before contents are thrown away  Matches and lighters in safe places  Follow directions when using heating devices  Check electrical appliances for loose wires or damage

4  Every escape route should begin in a bedroom  Most fatal fires occur at night  Window with a fire escape or ladder may save a life  All family members should know and understand their escape route and where to meet outside the home  Concentrate on saving yourself – forget pets

5  Leave quickly  Before opening a closed door- fee to see if it is hot  If you must exit through smoke crawl along floor  If you can’t get out – stay in room with door closed  If clothing on fire – STOP, DROP, ROLL  Once outside go to prearranged meeting area

6 Preventing Falls  Falls account for the largest number of non fatal injuries in homes  Safety in the Kitchen  Wipe up spills, use step ladder to reach items on high shelves, Put up wet floor sign

7  Safety in the bathroom  Put nonslip strips on the bottom of the tub or shower, install secure hand grip on the side of tub  Anchor rugs with nonslip tape or latex backing

8  Safety on the Stairs  Don’t leave objects on the steps  Keep staircases well light  Make sure handrails are stable  Put gates at top and bottom of stairs

9  Safety in other rooms  Secure electrical cords to baseboards with tape  Repair or replace all loose or worn carpeting  Arrange furniture so that it is our of heavy traffic area

10  Never refer to medicines as candy  Make sure that all medicines have child resistant caps  Put all medicines or poisonous substances away immediately after use  Keep all cleaning products in their original labeled containers  Store all poisonous substances in high cabinets and lock them

11  Never plug in more than two electrical appliances into wall outlet causes ELECTIRCAL OVERLOAD  Never use electrical appliance near water or when you are wet  Unplug small appliances, hair dryers and toasters when not using  Repair or replace broken appliances  Pull cords out by plug, not cord  Loose or damaged cords replaced

12  1994 1,300 people killed by accidental shootings  Many were children  1/3 of households have guns  All guns should be treated as if loaded  Unload guns before stored and lock them up  Never point a gun at anyone  Barrel pointed down whenever carried

13  Keep weapons out of school  Report any suspicion of firearms in school  Report all threats or harassment  Carry only enough money for small items avoid wearing very expensive clothes or jewelry  During evening events stay with a group in well light areas  Don’t take sides in others conflicts
