2 GETTING STARTED This course selection guide will walk you through selecting courses for your first semester here at NC State. 1.Using this guide, you will select your fall courses, including Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Life Science courses. Most students will take 15- 16 total credit hours during fall semester. 2.AP scores are addressed in this guide, though IB scores are not. Please email an advisor with questions regarding IB credit. 3. This guide will NOT keep track of your course selections. You need to keep your own list. Use the Enrollment Check Sheet (included in the email with this enrollment guide) to record the courses you select. 4.Use the links at the bottom of each page or within the text of the slide to navigate through this guide. (The arrow keys will not work.) Next You are here: Getting Started 1 of 2

3 GETTING STARTED, cont. 5.Navigate all the way to the end, to the slide titled “Final Thoughts.” 6.Once you are (almost) done, you will be prompted to take a short survey. Completion of this survey will prompt advisors to release your advising hold. The advising hold prevents you from enrolling in classes; you can not enroll until the hold is lifted by an advisor. The enrollment window (first date you may enroll in classes, once your advising hold is lifted) for incoming first year students will open June 8 th. Please use the links at the bottom of each page or options within the text of the slide to navigate through the course selection guide. Start with Biology You are here: Getting Started 2 of 2 Or, if you previously started working through this guide and are returning to finish your enrollment planning, you can jump to: Chemistry Math LSC/HES EnrollingChemistryMathLSC/HESEnrolling

4 BIOLOGY START First, you will choose your biology course. Do you have AP or transfer credit for Biology? YesYes, I have AP or transfer credit for Biology. AP Biology test scores of 4 or 5 result in NC State credit for BIO 181 and BIO 183. NoNo, I do not have AP or transfer credit. You are here: Biology Start

5 BIOLOGY If you have AP or transfer credit for BIO 181 and 183, you have several options (in no particular order): Option 1: Though you have credit, you may still wish to take BIO 181 or 183 (and lab) as a refresher. Option 2: Take a course that fulfills a General Education Program (GEP) requirement. Examples include psychology, anthropology, economics, literature, Africana studies, history, communications, etc. FYI courses, which have small class sizes, are a good option to consider.FYI courses Option 3: Take ENG 101. This is a first-year requirement for all majors at NC State. Please note, seats in ENG 101 may become available later this summer. Return to Biology StartReturn to Biology Start Go to Chemistry next Go to Chemistry next You are here: Biology, yes AP/TR credit Option 4: Take a course specific to a discipline in which you are interested.
