Last Class.... Who founded Islam again? What sort of things influenced this new religion? How did it change the culture of the people who converted? How did people feel about it?

What are the 5 Pillars?
5
More Video! Less Talking!
6
Shahadah – Faith A proclamation of faith by a Muslim Identifies the person as a monotheist, person who believes in one god Allows the person to claim Islam as part of their identity A ritual act that helps to shape a community
7
Shahadah – Faith Most Bedouin people at the time were polytheistic By openly claiming to be monotheistic they were claiming to be a part of this new movement started by Muhammad Middle Ages relation?
8
Salah – Prayer Salah is the prayer done by Muslims 5 times every day Must face towards Mecca, no matter where they are, specifically the Kaaba A demonstration of respect and deference Act of a community
9
Salah – Prayer Can you think of any rituals you do? Someone else? Not just the prayer, most homes have a place in their house for the Salah What does this say about the significance?
10
Zakah – Charity Like the Chiefs in the Clan system of the Bedouin Muslims must donate 2.5% of their income to charity To help the poorest of the community survive Allows wealthier people to aid those in need
11
Zakah – Charity Have you ever donated to charity? Why did you do it? How do you feel when you donate something to a person or a cause? Is charity a good thing for people to do?
12
Sawm – Fasting Sawm means Fasting... Or not eating from sunrise to sunset Associated with the Islamic holiday Ramadan Only for those who are able, allowances for pregnancy, illness
13
Sawm – Fasting Do other religions have a period of fasting? Why would a group of people go through ‘fasting’? ‘Making do with less’...a good thing or no?
14
Hajj - Pilgrimage A trip to Mecca to pray at the Kaaba -- A holy site for Islam, the place where other religions used as a holy site as well One in lifetime required Only if physically able to make it
15
Hajj - Pilgrimage Over 3 million visitors in 2012 alone If there are reasons that excuse Muslims for not going on the pilgrimage, why do so many do it? Have you ever gone on a trip across the world? Why did you do it? What can you say about people who make the trip?
