Atoms, Elements and The Periodic Table

Atoms are… - In all matter - The smallest part of matter

Describe: made of different types of atoms Explain: Example:Draw: Elements

Describe: Periodic or repeating pattern of the elements Explain: Example:Draw: Periodic Table

History of the Periodic Table  Dmitri Mendeleev – first scientist to create the table  He left room for elements yet to be discovered based on their properties (pg. 146)

History continued…  6 years after his table, his predicted elements were found  This set the basic pattern, but it became more complex

Elements

Atomic Mass - Atomic # = # of Protons Atomic # = # of Protons and Electrons (if the element is neutral)

Organization continued… Element Symbol Color: physical state at room temperature Background Color: metal, non-metal or metalloid

Groups and Periods Group (or Family) – elements in a column Period – elements in a row

Organization Trends -Organizes elements by properties; so predictable trends -Group 1: -Lose 1 electron -Group 2: -Lose 2 electrons -Group 18: -Don’t usually lose or gain electrons

Trends Left to right across the periodic table: -Atomic size decreases Top to bottom: -Atomic size increases Density also shows a pattern on the Periodic Table

What would this element fit under?  Door = Metal or Solid  Window = Non-metal or Gas  Back = Metalloid or Liquid

What would this element fit under?  Carbon – Solid, Liquid or Gas?  Cesium – Metal, Metalloid or Non-metal?  Mercury – Solid, Liquid or Gas?  Antimony - Metal, Metalloid or Non- metal?  Argon – Metal, Metalloid or Non-metal?
