With the Great Depression behind them, Americans tried to move forward facing challenges of war and change.

In 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President. It would be his responsibility to come up with a plan to help the country deal with the effects of the Great Depression. The Plan was called The New Deal. The New Deal The New Deal

The New Deal set up programs to provide people with jobs Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built dams on the Tennessee River to help produce electricity and control flooding. Works Progress Administration (WPA) hired people to build public buildings such as airports and post offices Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that paved roads, planted tree, and built sewage systems In North Carolina, the CCC built the Blue Ridge Parkway.
