What do you think? What is a mineral? Are minerals the same as rocks?
2
Minerals Definition: A naturally formed, inorganic solid with a crystalline structure. 4 questions to ask when identifying a mineral 1.Is it a solid? 2.Is it formed in nature? 3.Is it a nonliving material? 4.Does is have a crystalline structure?
3
Are They or Aren’t They? To be classified as a mineral, a substance must satisfy five requirements. Properties of Minerals
4
Lets look further… into how the crystalline structure is formed! Elements – a substance in its purest state, unable to be broken down further Atoms-smallest part of the element and has all properties making the element. Compound-substance made of two or more elements, chemically joined. The compound containing sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) make up….
5
Crystals also make up minerals! Crystals -solid, geometric forms of minerals produced by a repeating pattern of atoms, present throughout the space of the mineral. Each mineral is made up of its own crystalline structure
7
Types of Minerals Silicate minerals Contain silicon and oxygen Make up more than 90% of earths crust Examples QuartzFeldspar Biotite mica
8
Types of Minerals Nonsilicate minerals Does not contain combo of silicon and oxygen 6 ClassificationsExamples – Native elements copper – Carbonates calcite – Halides fluorite – Oxides corundum – Sulfates gypsum – Sulfides galena

What have you learned? Define in your own words what a mineral is What are minerals made up of?
