Band Aid: feed the world
A presentation on the effects of a charity celebrity endorsement

Origin Formed in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, Band Aid was a charity super group, featuring mainly American, British and Irish musicians and recording artists to raise money for anti-poverty efforts for Ethiopia. The groups name stemmed from the idea that the musicians were providing aid to the less fortunate and suggested that their project likened to putting a BandAid on a wound.

Cause The original BandAid ran from and was themed "FEED THE WORLD". Moved by the plight of starving children Geldof persuaded some of the biggest musical names of the 1980's to volunteer their support to his cause which lead to the release of "Do they know it is Christmas?“ This Single went on to become number 1 for 5 weeks and won BandAid a Grammy Award. Global Involvement Over three decades BandAid and Geldof brought together 3 different sets of popular celebrity musicians in the efforts of raising awareness for underdeveloped countries such as Ethiopia. These volunteer artists included Phil Collins, Steve Norman, Sting, Bono, George Michael, Boy George, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, Dido, Chris Martin, Daniel Bedingfield and countless more.

Inspirations The hit single "Do they know it is Christmas?" sold over 2 million copies worldwide and raised more than $24,000,000 USD for charity.This success was deemed possible due to a large increase in Celebrity Diplomacy. BandAids success inspired concert events such as LiveAid and USAforAfrica which combined with BandAid raised a further $150m USD for famine Relief

Bob Geldof Global Citizen
BandAid allowed global awareness because one citizen wanted to make a difference. It was through Bob Geldof’s individual effort and insight into Celebrity Diplomacy that his passion for the world to become more aware of poverty and famine that charities like BandAid and LiveAid were such as success.
