Transformers Electrical power transformer is a static device which transforms electrical energy from one circuit to another without any direct electrical connection and with the help of mutual induction between two windings. It transforms power from one circuit to another without changing its frequency but may be in different voltage level. Electrical power transformer is a static device which transforms electrical energy from one circuit to another without any direct electrical connection and with the help of mutual induction between two windings.
3
Uses It can rise or lower the level of Voltage or Current ( when voltage increases, current decreases and vice versa because P =V x I, and Power is same ) in an AC Circuit.
4
Transformer is the main reason to transmit and distribute power in AC instead of DC, because Transformer not work on DC so there are too difficulties to transmit power in DC.
5
Step Down Transformer Turnings – More Turns Voltage – High
Current - Low Turnings – Less Turns Voltage – Low Current - High
6
Step Up Transformer Turnings – Less Turns Voltage – Low
Current - High Turnings – Less Turns Voltage – Low Current - High

Power Transformer
8
Power Transformer Electrical power is generated in low voltage, as it is cost effective. But, these low voltage level of power can’t be transmitted to the consumer end directly as it will cause losses if the voltage level increases during transmission. Hence, it has to stepped up at the transmission end and should be stepped down in the receiving end. Disadvantage: Expensive
9
Auto Transformer Auto transformer is kind of electrical transformer where primary and secondary shares same common single winding. It is used when the ratio between high voltage and low voltage is greater than 2 It is cost effective as it consist of single winding, hence the copper usage in winding is less and area is also less when compared to power transformer
10
Disadvantage: For transformation ratio = 2, the size of the auto transformer would be approximately 50% of the corresponding size of two winding transformer. But for the transformation ratio say 20, however the size would be 95%. Hence the saving cost is appreciable when the ratio of transformer is low, that is lower than 2. An electrical connection between the primary and secondary is not always desirable Auto-transformers are particularly sensitive to the atmospheric over-voltages.
