Ma109: College Algebra Not a remedial course Assumes 2 years of high school algebra (or equivalent) and 21 Math ACT or sufficient score on placement exam Text: College Algebra by Dr. Avinash Sathaye –Available for free download –Printouts available at book stores Uses Web Homework system –Not in any sense an “online” course Calculators are expected – may be used but will not be required on tests Applications are primarily of algebra to geometry

Homework + quizzes total 65 Points = 14.44% of Grade Homework uses web system –Can submit any number of times till problem set expires –Can work together on homework (encouraged) –Can get external help on homework (permitted) –Number of homework points (out of 10 possible) on a test determined by average of scores on homework sets for that test At least 40% on Wed version homework + at least 85% on Sunday version for full 10 points. Less than 40% on Wed + at least 85% on Sunday version for 8 points. Less than 40% on Wed reduces max from Sunday score by 2 points (or to 0) Eight 5 point quizzes. These are unannounced. –No makeups. –The scores will be added, and your quiz grade will be the minimum of 25 and the sum of your quiz scores.

Web Homework System: http://www.appalmsp.org Login using student number (student number) as both login and password. If you pre-registered your account has been created for you. Your initial login is your student number; your initial password is your student number.

First time login login = ssno Password = ssno Some time soon login with “modify account settings” Checked – Use this to change Password, email, etc. (does not have to be done the first time)

Select “login” then “ Create ” a new account. Once your account is created you can login with your email as login and the password you chose. If you did not pre-register

Select “Web Homework”

If you did not pre-register Login, select “Web Homework” on the main page and then select Add/Drop Classes on this page.

Select University of Kentucky, Ma 109001X-Y(Eberhart), and press “Add Class” - DO NOT check “For Browsing Only” When done press “BACK” If you did not pre-register

Select “Printer Friendly Questions” then print the page from the browser “file” menu. This can be done for free in Mathskeller

Work the problems on paper and enter answers later (will likely need to log in again) As answers are entered press Save Work After some answers are entered press Go to Submit Button Problems do not need to be marked “done” to be checked. Yellow means an answer has been entered but a correct answer has not been submitted

When an answer has been submitted for a problem a dialogue box opens into which questions about the problem can be directed to the teacher. All comments or questions entered this way are submitted the next time the “submit and record” button is pressed

If too much time elapses the session will time out and you must re-enter password to continue

Diagnostic Test 25 Minutes on first day Does not influence grade. To help you assess what level of effort will be required to do well. Diagnostic paper will count for attendance today. Results will be returned (through web system by next class) –Only you get your results
