A new potential country: Belgium
We have started discussion with the Universities of Liege (J. R. Cudell) and Gent (A. Meli) The idea is to join JEM-EUSO in the context of the recently formed Belgian Cosmoparticle Network Yesterday kick-off meeting in Liege at the Liege Space Center (CSL) to evaluate interest in hardware. The funding scheme will be similar to Switzerland. Important: expertise on Optics (both reflective and refractive).

Mini-EUSO: Science objectives

Mini-EUSO block scheme: a refractive optics based on two Fresnel lenses images UV light on 1 PDM (36 MAPMTs). A SiPM moule is an option. 10 cm 10 cm Delivery to Roscosmos end 2016

Status: Japan The Japanese consortium has applied in Spring 2014 to a call for small scale projects open by ISAS/JAXA for a Japanese MOO participation to the KLYPVE-EUSO mission Approved by JAXA in July (2014) with the constrain that the funding/programmatic scenario must be clarified by December 2014. Intense studies between RIKEN (on behalf of the JEM-EUSO collaboration) and Moscow State University (MSU, Russia) to develop a K-EUSO concept. JEM-EUSO is in standby, not dead…. Too severe constrains on mass budget in the last call issued by JAXA/ISS in Spring 2014, but still efforts in the US and in EU countries

Russia The KLYPVE mission is studied by MSU and Energia: it is a program of ROSCOSMOS. Phase B should start soon. Limits of the old KLYPVE design Intense efforts toward a K-EUSO joint mission. However constrains from the Russian side (keep mirror optics instead of refractive lenses…) Recently (September 2014) a joint protocol between MSU and RIKEN has been signed.

An essential milestone reached in 2013
US and NASA An essential milestone reached in 2013 The NASA Science Mission Directorate approved the JEM-EUSO APRA proposal submitted by the US-EUSO team led by Angela Olinto (Chicago University). Funds are now flowing in the US and support EUSO-Balloon activities. JEM-EUSO is a mission recognized by NASA This might be the starting point for a stronger involvement of NASA in the mission aspects (launcher, mass, integration …) next step? An MOO in the open call? Proposal for a Balloon?

* ELIPS European Life and Physical Sciences in Space Programme
ESA EUSO is a study included in the ELIPS program of ESA’s Human Spaceflight and Exploration Directorate (includes ISS activities). An International Topical Team on “JEM-EUSO” has been established by ESA. It has been recently renewed. ESA has always be willing to act toward a coordinated plan among the international agencies and continues to support the developments for an EUSO-like mission and sees positively the collaboration with Russia * ELIPS European Life and Physical Sciences in Space Programme

ESA Topical Team on “JEM-EUSO”
Program to support the activities to develop JEM-EUSO: our policy has been to support travelling Students and postdocs from the participating countries (mainly Europeans “at large”) and the participation of “seniors” to key meetings. First tranche completed. Very effective use of the funds: 34 missions supported (20 kEuros)! A second tranche will be available for end 2014 and 2015.

Future? R&D: Operation in Utah of EUSO-TA (early 2015)
Data Analysis Second flight of the EUSO Balloon (in 2016) Operation of Mini-EUSO (delivery to ROSCOSMOS in 2016) Toward K-EUSO: Reach a final configuration of the mission (December 2014) Define the international role sharing Define a realistic development plan (to completion) Toward an EUSO-like mission: A team will develop a concept and then a proposal to be submitted in M5 (Simulation and Science WGs must play a key role) Explore all possibilities in the US.

Clarifications The new list of the JEM-EUSO members has been approved the last June in the Collaboration meeting in Palermo. The web site will be updated soon. The delay was caused by the late arrival of requests of modification. The list of authors does not coincide with the list of members. It includes members that have left the JEM-EUSO collaboration and will stay in the authorship until June 2015 Authors who have left the JEM-EUSO collaboration have not the right to access new data (e.g. the EUSO-Balloon data). New members will appear as authors after six months. The Pis are requested to update the national list at each collaboration meeting. Not at any time.
