PRESCHOOL EDUCATION: Not cumpolsory PRESCHOOL INSTITUTIONS: a nursery school, a kindergarten, a preschool FOUNDERS – country (county, town, municipality) - religious community - legal/natural person ROLE – full-day or shorter programme of education, health protection, nutrition and social care for children at the age of 6 months to 6,5 years The founder and parents share costs

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION Segments: I. ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS – cumpolsory for children at the age of 6,5 to 15 II. SPECIAL SCHOOLS – for children with developmental difficulties III. ART SCHOOLS – education in elementary music and dance schools

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION IV. ELEMENTARY EDUCATION IN THE LANGUAGE AND WRITING OF A NATIONAL MINORITY V. ELEMENTARY EDUCATION OF ADULTS (from the age of 15 who didn’t finish elementary school)

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION I. ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS - founded by the units of local self-government, towns, other physical and legal persons – compulsory and free for all the children with permanent residence in the Republic of Croatia, at the age of 6 to 15, irrespective of their citizenship - base of primary educational system - base for any further education, for extracurricular and self-education and permanent development and lifelong learning - lasts for 8 years

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION -conducted on the plan and programme of the Ministry (MZOS) and School Curriculum based on National Curriculum Framework (MZOS) - elementary schools can have a branch (district schools) - lessons are mostly held in 2 shifts (some schools in 3) with regular exchange of classes and breaks - lesson lasts 45 min and is followed by a 5 min break, snack break lasts at least 15 min (when there is an organised snack in school)

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION - there is a free bus transport organised for students who travel - distance – more than 3 km for 1st – 4th grade students - distance – more than 5 km for 5th – 8th grade students - optimal number of students in one class is 20 (minimum 14; maximum 28) - one form – students of the same class - combination form (branch, island school) – students of two or more classes

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Elementary education : Regular lessons – compulsory for all Optional lessons – compulsory for those who have chosen it Extra lessons – for those who need help Additional lessons – for those who want to achieve and do more Extracurricular activities – depending on students’ abilities, interests and wishes (not compulsory) Class lesson – compulsory for all

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Organised in two stages: 1. ONE-TEACHER EDUCATION /TEACHING - 1st to 4th grade students - regular education within one form/class – all subjects are taught by 1 teacher with the exception of the first foreign language (there is a possibility that Music and Art are being taught by subject teachers)

ONE-TEACHER TEACHING: COMPULSORY SCHOOL SUBJECTS - Croatian, Art, Music, Foreign Language, Maths, Science, Physical Education OPTIONAL SCHOOL SUBJECTS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (from 1st grade) SECOND FOREIGN LANGUAGE (from 4th grade) EXTRA CLASSES – based on choice/need, for students with difficulties in completing the programme ADDITIONAL CLASSES – based on choice, for those who show special interest and want to learn more EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES – according to students’ interests, abilities and wishes CLASS LESSON

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 2. SUBJECT TEACHING - 5th to 8th grade - subject teaching within one form/class – subject teachers

SUBJECT TEACHING: COMPULSORY SCHOOL SUBJECTS Croatian, Art, Music, Foreign Language, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Design and Technology, Physical Education (5th and 6th grade), Biology, Chemistry, Physics (instead of Science in 7th and 8th grade) OPTIONAL SCHOOL SUBJECTS – Religious Education, Second Foreign Language, ICT, other optional subjects EXTRA LESSONS ADDITIONAL LESSONS EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES CLASS LESSON

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Regular, optional, additional, extra and class lessons per week: - 1st to 4th grade students – max. 25 lessons - 5th to 8th grade students –max. 30 lessons Teachers’ weekly assignments: - one-teacher teaching ( classes and other forms of working with students, 22 lessons)

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Teachers’ weekly assignments: - subject teaching (regular, optional and class lesson): 20 (+2 extracurricular lessons) Croatian, Maths and teachers of subjects that are taught in all classes once a week 21 (+2 extracurricular lessons) foreign language teachers 22 (+2 extracurricular lessons) other subjects’ teachers, Religious Education, ICT and teachers in art schools

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Schools are administrated by headmister/headmisstres. There are two expert associates in every school: pedagogue school librarian If needed, there are: psychologists special education teachers and therapists senior nurses Administrative and technical personnel : secretary and accountant school cook janitor cleaning lady

SECONDARY EDUCATION: Free. Not compulsory. - depending on the type of instruction plan and program they offer: GYMNASIUMS (general or specialized) - lasts 4 years at the end of which a pupil receives a secondary school diploma

SECONDARY EDUCATION: VOCATIONAL AND TRADE SCHOOLS – (technical, industrial, trade and others), economy and trades, tourism and catering, agriculture, nutrition... - last 3 or 4 years at the end of which students receive a secondary professional degree or a basic professional degree ART SCHOOLS (music, dance, visual arts and others, defined by the type of instructional plan and program they offer) - lasts 4 years years at the end of which a student receives a secondary professional degree

SECONDARY EDUCATION THE STATE GRADUATION EXAM - after successfully passing the state graduation exam, higher education is possible

HIGHER EDUCATION: HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS : Universities Polytechnics Schools of professional higher education Study programmes are in line with the principles of Bologna Process.

HIGHER EDUCATION: UNIVERSITY STUDY INCLUDES THREE LEVELS: 1. UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY STUDY (3-4 years; baccalaureus) 2. GRADUATE UNIVERSITY STUDY(1-2 years; Magister with reference to a specialization ) 3. POSTGRADUATE UNIVERSITY STUDY (3 years; Doctor of Science or Doctor of Arts)

HIGHER EDUCATION: PROFESSIONAL STUDY - School of professional higher education or polytechnic - lasts 2-3 years; baccalaureus PROFESSIONAL STUDY 1-2 years; professional baccalaureus SPECIALIST PROFESSIONAL GRADUATE STUDY - 1-2 years; a specialist of the respective profession
