1 WHERE TO FIND INFORMATION WHAT TO ASK YOUR ADVISOR Psychology Department: Information and Advising

2 The Psychology Homepage Begin your search for information with the psychology homepage: http://www.d.umn.edu/psychology/http://www.d.umn.edu/psychology/ The links on the side bar will provide such as: Mission (About Us) Faculty: classes taught, office hours, interests. Courses you need for a psychology major or minor. Student Resources Admission to the program.

3 Admission to the Program: You must apply to the psychology program. To apply to the program go to the psychology department located in Bohannon Hall 320 and complete the admission application or go online to: www.d.umn.edu/psy.www.d.umn.edu/psy You may apply when you meet the following criteria: Completed a minimum of 24 credits Current overall GPA of at least a 2.5 Completed Psy 1003: General Psychology You will be notified if you are admitted into the major. Once admitted into the major you must maintain a 2.5 Major GPA.

4 The Major Within the link to the major there will be links to curriculum guidelines. Which curriculum do I follow? FAQ New on-campus curriculum (starting Fall 2007) New online curriculum ( starting Fall 2007) Old on-campus curriculum Old online curriculum These links will help you to know what courses you need to take before graduation.

5 Sophomores A 2.5 GPA an 24 credits are required to apply for admittance to the psychology major. (unless you are following the old campus curriculum) In the required foundation core, Psy 2003, Psy 3020, Psy 3021, and Psy 3022 is a 4 course sequence you need to begin your sophomore year. Consider doing an internship. PSY 2010 Human Service Seminar: Issues and Ethics in the Field is required if you want to do an internship. You are expected to complete a faculty-supervised independent research project during the design and methodology courses of the core curriculum. Students apply their methodology training to a topic of their choice; start thinking about a topic to research. Be involved with Psychology Club. If you choose to study abroad, start planning now.

6 Juniors Psy 3021 and Psy 3022 You are expected to complete a faculty-supervised independent research project during the design and methodology courses of the core curriculum. Students apply their methodology training to a topic of their choice. Consider doing an internship. Many of the courses have the option of online/distance learning education for students who prefer an independent study format. Consider Senior year options. Consider doing a UROP You need a 2.5 GPA to graduate with a degree in psychology.

7 Seniors Senior psychology majors with a GPA of at least 3.25 in psychology and 3.00 overall are eligible for departmental honors. Honors work may be completed as an individual honors project (Psy 3998)  as an individual honors application project under the direction of an advisor selected by the student (Psy 3997),  by completing an honors seminar (Psy 3985)  by completing a successful UROP project  or by receiving a GPA of 3.8 or better in all psychological courses. You will need to complete a credit check and have a 2.5 GPA. Ask your advisor about Graduate school information Participate in the Psychology Department Career night. The WebCT student orientation and handbook are contained here.orientation Students need to become familiar with WebCT before taking online courses.

12 Psychology Dept. Peer Advising Students helping students Located in Boh 320. Services include help with scheduling classes and referrals to resources or advisors as needed. Find online information on the psychology homepage under “Peer Advising.”

13 Registering for Classes. Before registering for classes you will need to check your APAS. The APAS report is a computerized summary of the progress you are making on your degree program. The report lets you know how you are doing at fulfilling the Liberal Education and Composition requirements as well as the major and minor requirements. Remember, you do need at least 120 credits total to graduate from UMD.

14 Review your APAS each semester. You are responsible for checking your APAS for any errors Possible Errors on the APAS could be:  Lack of transfer credits  Incorrect major listed  Electives not in correct category  Holds not removed To ask questions and change any errors you find:  Contact your advisor  Visit the Student Affairs Office -Boh 120 and see Pat Sundin for help.
