1 George the Geographer finds out about Oceans of the World

2 Almost ¾ of our planet is covered with water
The large areas of water are called Oceans There are 5 oceans in the world

3 There is a lot of ice here in the Arctic Ocean
Now I’m in the Atlantic Ocean This is also the Pacific Ocean Its warm in the Indian Ocean This is the Pacific Ocean It is also cold in the Southern Ocean

6 Return to map of the oceans
The largest ocean in the world – it covers almost 1/3 of the Earth’s surface. The deepest ocean in the world – part of it is 11 kilometres deep. There are over 25,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean. Pacific Ocean Return to map of the oceans

7 Return to map of the oceans
Greenland The second largest ocean in the world – it covers almost 1/5 of the Earth. It is the saltiest ocean on the planet. The longest mountain range in the world runs down the middle of the Atlantic. Greenland is the biggest island in the world. Atlantic Ocean Return to map of the oceans

8 Return to map of the oceans
The third largest ocean in the world. It is the warmest ocean on the planet – this limits the amount of animals that can live in the ocean. 17 million barrels of oil are moved across the ocean every day. Indian Ocean Return to map of the oceans

9 Return to map of the oceans
The smallest and shallowest of all the oceans on Earth. It is covered in ice in winter – ships can get trapped in the ice. More fish live along the edge of the Arctic Ocean than anywhere else on Earth. Arctic Ocean Return to map of the oceans

10 Return to map of the oceans
The fourth largest ocean on the planet. Some scientists and geographers think it is not a separate ocean, but part of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Southern Ocean Return to map of the oceans
