13
Frank Duff spoke to a couple who recently moved to the Windsor remembered former Champaign Lion Art Wildhagen. Art was Chatter editor for 20 years. Frank Duff followed him, served 2 years and wondered how Art did it for 20 years!
14
Program – Sam McGrew introduced today’s speaker, Pat Titus. Pat and her husband have owned Titus Farm, Arcola, IL since 1986. They raise about 800 pigs each year and grow corn and soy beans. She is active in the Pork Producers Association and has won awards for distinguished service.
15
She has spoken at Cerro Gordo High School, at Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs and thanked us for service to our communities. She is involved in promoting farm safety and farm safety just for kids. Her daughter is a member of Rotary and she had the opportunity to visit Bangalore with her Rotary club. Bangalore has over 12 million people in the city and lots of poverty. While there she also saw the work Lions do there.
16
By 2050 world population will be doubled and we will need 100% more food to meet the global demand. Farmers are the food basket of the world. Farming techniques and technology has changed dramatically in our lifetime.
17
In the 18 th and 19 th centuries farmers raised corn and got 50 bushels per acre. Today the norm is 200 to 235 bushels per acre. Today, one farmer can feed 155 people. In 1960 that number was only 25. By 2030 70% of all food will come from new methods of farming.
18
Today’s pork is safer and more nutritious that ever before. In the 1970s when everyone began watching the fats they ate, pork production had to be skinnied up.
19
Instead of “slopping” the hogs or feeding them the table scraps, they began feeding the pigs a more nutritious diet and selective breeding (leaner pigs bred with fatter pigs to produce leaner babies) was used to raise leaner pigs.
20
50 years ago pigs were raised outside. Today they are in modern climate controlled barns away from predators (like coyotes).
21
They have a barn for babies, a growing or nursery barn where they are fed corn, soybeans and milk and then are moved to a larger barn.
22
Pigs are very social so they are kept together. No bullying is allowed.
23
They are very careful to prevent disease so they keep the barns free of dirt and follow FDA rules. If the pig does get sick they use only FDS approved medications.
24
Pigs poop, so the manure is carefully collected and later used as fertilizer on the fields. Greenhouse gases have been reduced. They practice continuous improvement through research and training employees.
25
Seven cuts of pork are on average 16% leaner than 20 years ago. Pork’s slim 7: pork tenderloin, boneless loin chop, ground port, boneless top loin roast, bone-in center loin chop, bone-in rib chop and bone-in sirloin roast are just as lean as chicken.
26
In 2012 pork requires less cooking than in the past.
27
Export demand is increasing with Japan being the lead purchaser. 25% of the jobs in the US are attributed to agriculture. Farmers care about producing safe nutritious food, the well being of animals, public health, a safe workplace, a better community and safeguarding the land.
28
40 years ago it took well over a year to raise pigs from birth to market, (260 to 280 pounds) now it takes five to six months.
29
Special breeding created a hybrid breed or company hog. It had longer ears that covered their eyes to the point they could not see very well and made them seem dumb.
30
Titus Farm has raised 3 kids on the farm and, so each child could show, they raised 3 different breeds of pigs: Yorkshires (white pigs), Polands (black & white pigs) and Durocs (red pigs). Durocs are more excitable than the other breeds.
31
Tailtwister – Omer Benn asked Byron Balbach to answer a question about last week’s LIF speaker. Byron responded that he could not--because he was not here last week. So he asked Sam McGrew to carry the bucket.
32
and fined Byron for insubordination!
33
The question, Where is Lions of Illinois Foundation’s home? The answer, Sycamore, IL. These gentlemen couldn’t answer correctly… so… had to pay.
34
Fonda Bowden paid for having won the lottery.
35
Rich King paid remembering his father died a year ago today.
36
Then he fined David Hunter for having a birthday. These Lions can hardly believe Mr. Twister would do that again in light of what has happened to him before for that…
