Introductory deck to Avaya WLAN 9100 Series
WLAN 9100 is a new WLAN solution that Avaya introduced in June 2014 Avaya Wireless LAN A wireless network that supports the way you work
2
“It was great knowing you, but I really need to get connected…”
<Icebreaker slide > - A social experiment, organized by Cyber Security Research, included a clause in the terms and conditions of a free public wifi service in London, England. WiFi usage was free, provided "the recipient agreed to assign their first born child to us for the duration of eternity.“ Six people signed up to the WiFi in just over an hour – inadvertently signing away their first born children. Today’s Reality - everyone wants WiFi
3
Wi-Fi capacity can’t keep up with the demand
Today’s environment: the ‘Internet of Things’ Influx of devices, equipment etc. that are “networked” Increasingly these devices and equipment are mobile/ Wi-Fi enabled Phones, Tablets, PCs, Printers, Medical devices, Watches, Video Surveillance cameras …. The list goes on Result is many Wi-Fi networks are overwhelmed They can’t keep up with the demand
4
Today’s Wi-Fi Challenges
Unpredictable Applications Myriad of devices & users Consider WiFi challenges: Applications - Average user approx. 40 applications on their smart phone Business apps (collaboration/Scopia, salesforce etc), personal apps (facebook, etc.) In a wireless environment, all users that connect to an Access Point share the bandwidth / wireless is a shared medium) In business it is important to ensure business critical apps get priority and that the network is not bogged down by personal or unproductive applications. Devices BYOD is resulting in many different devices entering the workplace User average 3 devices Spectrum Congestion Wireless spectrum, because it is a shared medium, is getting very crowded Especially true for the 2.4GHz spectrum Also challenges from something called “sticky clients”. These are those mobile devices that don't roam to the best Access Point when a person moves around. Staying with an AP that is a long way away, causes significant performance degradation for other users on that AP. This is because the bandwidth of an AP is shared among all users. Complexity Complexity associated with moving to the latest wireless industry standard (802.11ac) Configuration and provisioning of Access Points etc . Spectrum Congestion Complex planning, deployment & support

A next gen solution designed for the way YOU work
Why Avaya WLAN 9100 Series? Why the WLAN 9100? It is a next generation solution that is designed for the way YOU work. Whether you are a doctor in a hospital that needs to access images on the move Or a teacher in a school wanting to take advantage of 1:1 student learning Or people in enterprises globally who want to work and collaborate better together WLAN is the network that enables that engagement. It offers reliable, seamless mobility and delivers a high quality user experience on your mobile devices. A next gen solution designed for the way YOU work
6
Application Visibility and Control
WLAN 9100 ensures, with 100% certainty, wireless business applications aren’t compromised by recreational applications. Application-level control is important because it ensures a predictable application performance. This way business applications are not hindered by recreational apps. This also gives granular control to IT administrators, to define which specific applications can be used by which user groups. Avaya Application Control is capable of recognizing more than 1,300 applications. This enables enterprises to block, throttle or apply QoS to applications, directly at the network edge. For example, during school hours, you can block students from using facebook and prioritize eLearning applications. This reduces network load and ensures a high quality experience for the most important applications. Prioritize the apps that matter, block those that don’t

Programmable Radios Shape your wireless environment to your users
DID YOU KNOW Most Wireless LAN Access Points have fixed radios? With WLAN 9100 every radio in every AP is programmable The result? A wireless network optimized for the needs of your business Software Programmable Radios: Unlike other vendors solutions where the radios in Access Points are preset, WLAN 9100 supports software programmable radios where each radio can be programed for the specific client environment. For example, if all clients are 2.4GHz (typically low end smart phones, tablets, media players like the Apple iPods), both radios can be set to 2.4GHz. Over time, as the client environment changes (i.e. newer or more high end smart phones/tablets, laptops etc. come onto the network), the APs can be customized to ensure an optimal user experience. This allows enterprises to customize their APs, based on their specific client environment. You can put legacy device traffic on one frequency & newer technology devices on the other for optimal usage. Shape your wireless environment to your users
8
Up to 70% more bandwidth than competitive offerings
Why 70%? Consider an industry standard , 3x ac AP (fixed config) Radio 1 = 225Mbps (2.4GHz) Radio 2 = 1.3Gbps (5GHz) Max Bandwidth = 1.5Gbps With Avaya, every radio in our APs can be configured Radio 1 =1.3 Gbps (5Ghz) Radio 2 = 1.3 Gbps (5Ghz) Max bandwidth = 2.6 Gbps The programmable radio capability allows you to future proof your network! When you consider a typical ac Access Point for sale today, they have two radios – one running at 2.4 GHz and the second at 5Ghz. The radio’s are fixed and the maximum bandwidth you can have is 1.5 Gbps. With the Avaya ac Access Point, the radios are software programmable. What this means is you can have one running at 2.4 GHz and the second at 5Ghz today if that is what your user environment warrants, but in the future, as your client devices evolve, you can set both radios to 5GHz and get up to 2.6 Gbps of bandwidth capacity from your AP. 70% more than competitive offerings!! Supporting more users, more devices, more applications
9
Technician Free Upgrades
Investment Protection + Throughput Savings Another unique capability of the WLAN 9100 Series is that you can buy n technology today and upgrade to ac later with just a software license. Most of our competitors upgrades from .11n to .11ac require a manual swap-out of the Access Point. That is, a technician must be dispatched to climb a ladder and swap the AP, causing Labor and OPEX costs. Avaya WLAN 9100 offers a software only upgrade from n to ac. This way a company can start with .11n and upgrade to .11ac in their time, without having to physically touch the AP. Software only upgrade from n to ac
10
Simplified Controller-less Architecture
Avaya WLAN 9100 also offers a next generation controller-less architecture. Many WLAN solutions in the market today still offer a controller based architecture that comprises a wireless controller and Access Points. With the move to ac and gigabit bandwidth this is problematic as the controller can become a choke point (all the traffic traverses via the controller) WLAN 9100 offers a controller-less or distributed controller architecture, eliminating the controller choke point and bottleneck. It offers an integrated architecture, where everything needed for a secure, high-performance wireless LAN is built directly into each wireless access point. This simple two tier architecture – APs and Management (WLAN Orchestration system) – translates to reduced equipment requirements and costs. No single point of failure or performance bottleneck
11
Comprehensive management
WLAN Orchestration System (WOS) offers intuitive, comprehensive management. There are two flavors of WOS One is on premise - this is what is available today A second flavor is cloud based management - which we will roll out in 2015. The WLAN Orchestration System is an extremely scalable, intuitive tool that provides complete visibility over the network and applications running over it. One instance of the management application can support up to 5000 APs Includes a built into the planning tool so you don’t need to purchase a separate site planner tool Unparalleled visibility of the network & the applications
12
Anytime, Anywhere Access
Advanced Radio Frequency (RF) Management improves the user experience by maximizing the use of RF resources. This is specially important for clients that require roaming assistance or for sticky clients. Roaming assist – This helps clients roam to APs that will give them high quality connections & best user experience. Some smart phones and tablets will stay connected to a radio with poor signal quality, even when there’s a radio with better signal strength within range – roaming assist gently nudges clients to an AP that gives it a better signal. It does this by assisting the device to deauthenticate if certain parameters are met and reauthenticate to a new AP. This happens within milliseconds – prevents interruption to apps. Farewell to ‘sticky’ clients
13
The right level of access, to the right users, at the right time
Secure Network Access The first challenge of any wireless (or wired) network security policy is controlling access to the network. Because most Wi-Fi devices are mobile, they can connect to hundreds of networks in their lifetime. Avaya Identity Engines solution is fully integrated with the WLAN 9100 solution (IDE LITE is provided as part of the WLAN Orchestration system) providing centralized authentication and authorization for devices including: AAA identity-based network access control Easy-to-use standards- based policy engine RADIUS integration with all enterprise network equipment Quick and deep integration with major directories It makes it easier and more cost effective for organizations to provide secure, controlled BYOD access to employees and guests on the wireless network. It gives the right users, the right level of access, to the right resources, at the right time. Flexible Network Access The right level of access, to the right users, at the right time

Including high density environments
APs with Four Programmable Radios Dual Gig Ethernet Ports Fabric Ready Conference/Auditorium design Avaya also offers four radio APs tailored for high density environments where many users need to be supported within a fixed area. Examples of high-density wireless environments include convention centers, auditoriums, hotel meeting rooms, lecture halls, sports stadiums, and concert halls. Providing high-density wireless coverage in these types of large, open venues poses a number of challenges in wireless network design due to the number of uncontrollable variables, including the total number of active wireless clients in the area, the total number online at any one time, the spacing between the clients, and the amount of client roaming throughout the venue. Avaya’s four radio Access Points are ideal for these environments. Two model options: WLAN Access Point 9172 is a high performance, four radio, ac, 2x2 Multiple Input / Multiple Output (MIMO) access point (AP). WLAN Access Point 9173 is a high performance, four radio, ac, 3x3 Multiple Input / Multiple Output (MIMO) access point (AP). They deliver superior price and performance by integrating four software programmable (2.4GHz/5GHz) modular radios with high gain directional antennas, integrated wireless controller, multi-gigabit switch, firewall, threat sensor and spectrum analyzer into a single AP.
