Heart Rates Nathan Forsythe
2
Grade Level: 9th-12th Subject: Health and Wellness Summary: The purpose of this lesson is for students to be able to identify and understand the different heart rates for a normal teenager. Objective: Given an interactive lesson, the student will be able to identify and understand heart rates for a normal teenager with 100% accuracy. Standard: Identify resting, maximum, target and recovery heart rate
3
Resting and Maximum Heart Rates
Resting Heart rate for a normal teenager between the ages of should be anywhere from 50 to 90 beats per minute. Those who have more anxiety and stress tend to have a higher heart rate than others and the more caffeine that a person has, the higher the resting heart rate will be. Maximum heart rate for a normal, active teenager should be anywhere between 200 and 205 beats per minute. An active teenager should be getting around 60 minutes, 3 times a week of vigorous activity to maintain a healthy and normal heart rate.
4
Target and Recovery Heart Rate
Target heart rate is the range of heart rate that maximizes cardiovascular exercise or fat loss. You want to aim for 50% to 70% of your maximum heart rate for fat loss and 70% to 85% of you maximum heart rate for cardiovascular exercise. So a healthy 16 year old would have a heart rate of around 102 and 143 beats per minute. Recovery Heart Rate is how long it takes your heart to get back to the resting heart rate target. To find out how long it takes you to get there, take your pulse 10 seconds after exercising and one minute after exercising. The difference between the two is your recovery heart rate. The larger the number, the better your recovery heart rate is.

Question 1 What is a normal teenagers resting heart beat rate?
beats per minute 70-90 beats per minute 50-90 beats per minute
6
Correct! A normal teenager between the ages of should have a resting heart rate of 50 to 90 beats per minute!
7
Question 2 What could cause a persons heart rate to increase?
Caffeine and Nicotein Watching TV Walking
8
CORRECT!!!! Caffeine and Nicotein are two of the leading causes of increased heart rate.
9
Conclusion In this lesson we have learned what a normal teenagers resting, maximum, recovery and target rate heart beat should be. Each student should strive for beats per minute heart rate while resting and maximum heart rate while exercising.
