OUTLINE 1.Overview of talk 2.Team mission statement 3.3 representative tasks 4.Lo-fi prototype structure 5.3 scenarios shown carrying out each task w/ lo-fi 6.Experimental method 7.Experimental results 8.Suggested UI changes 9.Summary of talk

Overview For Tutors Hard to advertise yourself and skills Hard to coordinate schedules. For Tutees & Parents Tough and time consuming to find a helpful tutor that you can trust. SOLUTION An app that helps connect hardworking students with helpful, reliable tutors Problem

Team mission statement Connecting helpful tutors with hardworking students

First task: One Time Tutor Functionality: Tutee needs a one time tutor to clarify a concept Tutee searches for available tutor by rating, availability, and location For example, Natalia is stressed about not understanding recursion for an upcoming midterm, uses Tutera to get extra help to understand concept.

Second task: Long term tutor request Functionality: Tutee needs a long term tutor for continually help Similar to one time tutor request process but added UIs to track progress and book future sessions For example, Leo needs help to understand concepts for remainder of the quarter, he uses Tutera to get multiple tutoring sessions to do well in the class.

Third task: Person recommends tutor to somebody else Functionality: Tutee recommends tutor to somebody else Tutee reviews past session and recommend tutor to somebody else For example, Vincent really thought Valentina was a great math tutor he had for a past class he took. He knows his friend, Jen is now taking that class and could use outside help.

More tasks from tutor More tasks we explored… As a tutor accept incoming appointment request and schedule create profile and payment information Review past session notes and ratings of prior tutees

Lo-fi prototype structure Logon screen If tutor, use dashboard If tutee, search for…

3 scenarios for each task TASK 1 One time tutor Searching Rating Paying TASK 2 Long term tutor Create profile Book multiple sessions Get feedback from sessions TASK 3 Recommend tutor to a friend Search for tutor Go to tutee dashboard, go to past sessions Recommend via email

Experimental method Using script for all participants, tester asks a user… If they have been a tutor, if so, ask user to act a tutor with app If tutee, decide on one time or long term option

Experimental results Tested 5 participants 3 tutees All tried one time and long term options 1 recommended app to a friend 2 tutors Creating profile Review session notes Accept incoming tutee appointment

Experimental results - Tutees 3 tutees tested All tried one time and long term options 1 recommended app to a friend PROS booking a short-term tutor and paying/rating a tutor went well with users CONS Recommend to a friend was not intuitive and long term tutor regarding payment methods

Experimental results - Tutors 2 tutors tested Creating profile Review session notes Accept incoming tutee PROS Next appointment alert was upfront on dashboard CONS Create profile wasn’t clear and inputting availability

Suggested UI changes - In General As tutee or tutor, export appointment to Google calendar Autofill could be nice (standard autofill from Chrome)

Suggested UI changes - Tutee As tutee Recommend friend by posting to social media or a button Describe other payment means better, also give receipts if done via cash Have option to book another session with same tutor On scheduling appointments, use X or grayed out for not available times for tutor

Suggested UI changes - Tutor As tutor put in rate for tutees to see Subjects and grades teaching (high school level, college students, etc) Describe what it means to rate a tutee better, are they attentive, smart, late, etc? If not free at specified time for new request, give option to say schedule at another time

Summary of talk 3 tasks for tutee One time tutor – searching, rating, paying Long term tutor – create profile, book multiple sessions, get feedback as well as searching, rating, paying Recommend to a friend - search for tutor, go to tutee dashboard & go to past sessions, recommend via email More tasks for tutor accept incoming appointment request and schedule create profile and payment information Review past session notes and ratings of prior tutees UI changes for medium fidelity prototype
