Beliefs In his Gospel of wealth, he believes that the rich have an obligation to make society better He also believed that people should help themselves become rich and shouldn’t have to be directly helped Was one of the few examples where working hard and having a little luck will get you rich

Beginnings Born in Scotland to a weaver and his wife The weaver lost his job when the Industrial revolution started and the steam powered loom was created Moved to America when his mother convinced his father (weaver) to move to America and seek the promise of limitless opportunity for all

As a common laborer Began working as a telegraph delivery boy Elevated to telegraph operator when boss noticed his skill as delivery boy Elevated to Pennsylvania RR division assistant Began investing in sleeping car company, and accumulating his massive wealth later on when he earned a huge return from this

As a CEO Founded the Keystone Bridge Co. making bridges out of iron so it would last longer than the wooden bridges of the day A decade later founded the Carnegie Steel Company after learning of Bessemer process for quickly making steel Sells to J.P. Morgan, officially retires from business

As philanthropist In his last years donated money to found public libraries so that that people can learn without paying for books Founded college funds to help those who can’t pay an opportunity to still get educated Started pension plan for his former employees of Carnegie steel

Legacy Not as controversial as his fellow millionaires Rockefeller or Vanderbilt Seen by most as a true rags to riches millionaire as he came to America as an immigrant from Scotland looking for hope As a philanthropist most people don’t pay attention to his smaller controversies
