Certificate 3 in Engineering Fabrication Trade E-Validation project 2013 Presented by Steve McMahon & Jaci Ganendran
2
Overview of Project CIT proposes to develop a process to independently validate assessment tools and student assessment outcomes for apprentices in the Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (MEM30305) using a number of eLearning tools (e.g. Moodle, Adobe Connect and EQUELLA). The project will aim to trial a model to effectively engage metal fabrication experts from employers, industry groups and other RTOs across Australia using the eLearning tools to validate the formative and summative assessment tools and outcomes (including those completed through RPL) for seven units of competency (six core and one elective) from the Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication qualification.

Developing the Validation Tool - EQUELLA Having the equipment to enable online connection with reliable download speed Training in the validation process that includes face to face and online interaction. Experience with using EQUELLA Understanding of the Training Package how does the performance criteria that students are assessed against, relate to the resources. Identifying IT skills the RTO & Industry needed to participate in e-Validation
7
IT challenges Identifying IT skills needed to participate in e-Validation Reliable internet connections and download speed Having the programs that will open attachments Being able to access other forms of technology to access information e.g. Tablets, mobile phones etc. Skills in using online meeting rooms e.g. Adobe CONNECT, Blackboard & EQUELLA Time management to gain the skills needed The challenges faced with IT skills & Technology to participate in e-Validation

Exemplar of students assessment These samples of the students actual work is presented at the validation process 3 samples of each practical assessment are viewed This also includes work that is not to an industry standard

Industry feedback and suggestions To date we have piloted this with 5 members of the pilot group and have received some constructive feedback on how they perceive the validation process should work. Some key points that have been part of the discussion to date: Ensure that the wording is text that is relevant to industry and not structured to the VET environment. Keep the flow of the links to evidence in line with the validation questions What is the difference between assessment work and assessment task? This process has given Industry & Tafe a better insight to the skills and knowledge that is currently required to be successful in the engineering environment. The amount of time it will take to validate a unit of competency
