YOU have the power!!!!

2 What exactly IS bullying?
Repeated behaviors over time that Victimize one person And cause him/her to feel unsafe

3 What are some of the “repeated” aggressive behaviors?
Physical (fighting, unwanted touching) Verbal (name calling, public ridicule) Written (notes, books, and pictures) Gossip; rumoring (untrue, unkind stories) Sexual, ethnic or religious harassment Hazing Graffiti Exclusion of others

4 Why do people bully? People bully others for may reasons:
To feel powerful To gain esteem among peers Because he/she is bullied by someone else To get revenge Just to be mean

5 Are there different kinds of victims?
Passive Victims are those who are afraid. They do not stand up for themselves. Provocative Victims are those who are afraid and often are part of the problem. They try to fight back, but they don’t cope well. Vicarious Victims are those who see the bullying, are afraid to tell, and are deeply affected by another person’s pain.

6 What is a bystander? A bystander is a person who sees the bullying and has the power to get involved, but doesn’t. They are often afraid to get involved because: They could be the next victim They don’t know how to help

7 Your Experience…. Think about a time when you may have been a bully, victim, or bystander. On your index card, briefly describe the incident and write: What happened? How you felt? What did you do?

8 Did you know that… 85% of students in schools are neither bullies nor victims? As part of that 85% you have MORE power than ANY BULLY or VICTIM in your school? If all the students in this class decided to stop bullying and victimization in their school, EVERYONE would like coming to school and would feel safer? There would be great improvement in student achievement?

9 Strategies for stopping bullying… Let’s review HAHASO
H = Get Help A = Assert Yourself H = Use Humor A = Avoid the situation S= Use Self Talk to frame your thinking O= Own it

10 How can YOU help keep your school safe?
If you are the victim… Stay CALM…. Breathe, think, act Tell someone you trust! Avoid being in situations with the bully Ask your friends to help you Stand up for yourself and tell the bully to stop.

11 How can YOU help keep your school safe?
If you are the bystander… Stay CALM…breathe, think, act Tell someone you trust! Ask your friends to help you Check in with the victim Provide support to the victim
