1 MONTHLY CONTINUING EDUCATION SERIES
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT MONTHLY CONTINUING EDUCATION SERIES Presented by Dr. Gail Davis, DDS March 8, 2014

2 WHAT IS AN ESSENTIAL OIL?
Natural aromatic compounds found in plants Plant’s immune system 1 drop peppermint oil = 26 cups peppermint tea Powerful, safe benefits without side effects Can have 100’s of compounds, each with a healing benefit (Oil sacs on peppermint leaf)

3 CERTIFIED PURE THERAPEUTIC GRADE
There are different grades of essential oils on the market, with no quality control required. 95% of essential oils on the market are synthetic and can be toxic to our health. CPTG is specific to doterra and holds the smallest percentage of essential oils on the market. This is the most potent, powerful, and safest. Plants must be sourced from native growing region Using specific plant part, during proper season No Pesticides, solvents or any other adulterations Every liter sent out for FIVE tests at 3rd party lab Pure enough to take as dietary supplements, and are certified as GRAS (safe for human consumption) by the FDA.

4 THEY KILL VIRUSES & BACTERIA
They can cross a cell wall without destroying the cell membrane. Antibiotics can throw off the gut flora which is where much of our immune system and serotonin is located. Also effective against MRSA.

5 AROMATIC TOPICAL INTERNAL
ESSENTIAL OIL USES AROMATIC TOPICAL INTERNAL AROMATIC—Diffuse in a room to purify the air or to positively effect emotion TOPICAL—Apply directly to skin during massage or for topical therapy INTERNAL—This is specific to doterra’s CPTG essential oils, consume as a dietary supplement for targeted wellness

6 PAIN Everyone will experience PAIN.
50 % of ER visits are PAIN related. More than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic PAIN. PAIN costs $600 billion a year in medical treatments and lost productivity.

7 THE PAIN CYCLE When we are in pain, we have a hard time sleeping. Lack of sleep makes the pain worse and decreases energy. This can effect the mood, leading to depression, anger, and anxiety; which, in turn, makes coping with the pain more difficult. Pain, coupled with the limits it puts on your life, makes it difficult to exercise and lack of activity can worsen the pain. Lack of activity also leads to low energy, and the whole cycle starts all over again.

8 OUR BIGGEST DRUG PROBLEM
“The biggest and fastest growing part of American’s drug problem is prescription drug abuse.” National Institute on Drug Abuse When we are looking at ways to manage our pain, why should we look at alternatives to prescription pain killers? The reality is that America’s biggest drug problem is not heroin or cocaine, it’s prescriptive pain killers.

9 OUR BIGGEST DRUG PROBLEM
“The number of overdose deaths from pain killers more than tripled from 1999 to ” Pharmacoepidemiology & Drug Safety

10 PRESCRIPTIVE PAIN KILLERS
Addictive, Toxic to our organs over time, Many side effects Don’t improve conditions that cause pain.

11 ESSENTIAL OILS Improve or resolve many pain issues
Safe, without side effects healthy benefits (example, peppermint) Save money Peppermint, among its hundreds of uses, relieves pain AND is antibacterial, eases stomach ache, lowers fever, reduces congestion. Essential oils save money because they can replace OTC & Prescriptions/doctor’s visits, they work quickly, and are powerfully concentrated so we only need a drop or two at a time.

12 HOW PAIN WORKS So, what is pain, and how does it work? Pain is the body’s warning signal that there is some sort of infection or injury in the body. Nerves sense the pain stimulus and send pain signals to the brain for processing and action. Take a look at this graphic showing a nerve, particularly the axon of the nerve.  Axons are the primary transmission lines of the nervous system. They transmit information such as heat sensations and pain to different neurons, muscles and glands. Nerves sense the pain stimulus and send pain signals to the brain for processing and action.

13 INFLAMMATION Normal response to injury or infection
Pain or discomfort usually follows damaging to tissues, but how the body repairs

14 ACUTE VS CHRONIC INFLAMMATION
What is the difference between acute and chronic inflammation? This is really where the battle begins within the body. It’s healthy to have these acute instances of inflammation, not healthy to have sustained, chronic inflammation within the body. Acute inflammation is normal Chronic inflammation is devastating as it remains in the body

15 INFLAMMATORY DISEASE 50% of Americans suffer from an inflammatory disorder, and more are at risk. Time Magazine did an article calling inflammation “The Secret Killer”

16 Traditionally we’ve thought of inflammatory and degenerative disease as something that we do not have to worry about until later in life, however, we are now having to think about it at a much younger age.

17 ACUTE INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE
Trigger Inflammation Tissue Damage BODY REPAIRS There’s some type of trigger (acute damage or infection), which triggers an inflammatory response, which triggers secondary tissue damage, and the normal response is that the body repairs itself.

18 CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE
Trigger Inflammation Tissue Damage CYCLE REPEATS With chronic inflammation there is no repair cycle at the end. It is a repetitive cycle that once again creates inflammation, which triggers secondary tissue damage, and the cycle repeats again and again. So, long term, we have dramatic results in terms of how the tissue becomes compromised, and we can have the whole body compromised as a result of that.

19 TRIGGERS… STRESS Pathogen Exposure Injury Food Additives TRIGGERS
Environmental Toxins Bad Diet Lack of Nutrients STRESS Here are some of the triggers for chronic inflammation. Chronic exposure to these triggers leads to a chronic inflammatory response. Pathogen Exposure Medications

20 INFLAMMATORY DISEASE The thought in the medical community now is that inflammation is generally the root cause of most pain and disease. It leads to autoimmune diseases, arthritis, neurological diseases and much more.

21 PREVENTING INFLAMMATION
Lifestyle is the biggest factor to both produce and eliminate inflammation. Lifestyle is the biggest factor to both produce and eliminate inflammation and right there at the bottom of doTERRA’s wellness pyramid, the most important thing we can do is to eat right.

22 LIFE LONG VITALITY PACK
We can look at nutrition as a whole. One of the first things we can do in terms of controlling inflammation is to build a foundation for our body to draw upon. The LLV is one of the most important things we can do on a daily basis to manage inflammation and help our body to repair itself.

23 ALPHA CRS Cellular Vitality Complex Helps control inflammation
10-15 servings powdered fruits and vegetables 300 mg Boswellic Acids from Frankincense per dose Loaded with antioxidant polyphenols Has servings of powdered fruits and vegetables per dose. It has 300 mg of Boswellic Acids per dose, and that is significant because the latest research suggests that Boswellic Acids are anti-inflammatory agents within the body. Alpha CRS is loaded with polyphenols, so it is a vital part of our daily regimen in order to control inflammation. Studies have shown that Polyphenols are from 4 to as much as 70 times more potent than regular vitamins. Polyphenols are also high in antioxidants - also help the body control these inflammatory responses.

24 FATTY ACIDS AND INFLAMMATION
We need omega 6, they help the body create a healthy immune response, including the acute inflammation we need to repair. However, we have too many of them in our diet. They create inflammation in the body. Omega 3s are involved in the anti-inflammatory responses in the body as well as creating homeostasis in the body. So its important that we have an accurate balance between the two.

25 FATTY ACIDS AND THE MYELIN SHEATH
Remember the slide from earlier on how pain works? Nerve Axons are the primary transmission lines of the nervous system. The axon is protected by what is called the Myelin Sheath. Axon dysfunction (or damage to the myelin sheath, and the axon below) causes many inherited and acquired neurological disorders which can affect both the peripheral and central neurons and can result in autoimmune dysfunction and chronic pain. A study in a Harvard affiliated hospital in Massachusetts, found that of half of study patients with fibromyalgia were found to have damage to nerve fibers in their skin along with compromised nerve fiber density. So what does this have to do with inflammation? Inflammation can effect every tissue in the body. One of the most susceptible is the central nervous system particularly the brain and the myelin sheath, which protects nerve fibers. The brain is made up of 80% fatty acids and the myelin sheath is made up of 70% fatty acids. So when it comes to protecting the nerves and reducing pain, it is particularly important to make sure we are getting our Omega fatty acids.

26 XEO MEGA Marine Flaxseed oil Pomegranate Seed oil Evening Primrose oil
ESSENTIAL OIL OMEGA COMPLEX Marine Flaxseed oil Pomegranate Seed oil Evening Primrose oil Cranberry Seed oil The XEO Mega, one of the 3 supplements in the LLV, contains land and sea based sources of Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Has a blend of 9 different anti-inflammatory and antioxidant essential oils including Frankincense, clove, and others. Also comes in a vegan version without the fish oil. Contains a blend of 9 different anti-inflammatory and antioxidant essential oils

27 MICROPLEX VMZ FOOD NUTRIENT COMPLEX
Contains vital nutrients and minerals Remember, one of the triggers of inflammation is lack of nutrients and poor diet. Microplex VMz contains vital nutrients and minerals that our diets often lack such as iron, magnesium, chromium, zinc, etc.

28 REDUCE OR ELIMINATE PAIN FROM INFLAMMATION
Using these three supplements in the Life Long Vitality pack is one of the most important things we can do on a daily basis to manage inflammation and get to the root of the causes of pain.

29 FIBROMYALGIA TESTIMONIAL: NIKITA
Now we’ll hear from Nikita who has lived with Fibromyalgia for a some time and has seen a complete elimination of her symptoms using the LLV.

30 ESSENTIAL OILS: ANTI-INFLAMMATORY & PAIN KILLING BENEFITS
Now, that we’ve addressed the life style changes we can take to manage inflammation, let’s get in to a little bit about how essential oils can help us manage inflammation and take care of pain. Primary area of research on essential oils Research suggests they are effective at both

31 ESSENTIAL OILS FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT
Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DTI), Shows where pain is in the body This is from a study presented to the Australian Society of Cosmetic Chemists in They used Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DTI) to show the effectiveness of essential oils for pain management. The researchers developed two essential oil blends based on available research. These images show a patient with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and associated pain before and 3 minutes after application on abdominal area of a calming blend for pain and inflammation. White color indicates extreme pain, followed in intensity by red, orange and yellow. Green indicates absence of pain. Within 3 minutes the pain is greatly reduced. Presented to the Australian Society of Cosmetic Chemists in 2008 (

32 ESSENTIAL OILS FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT
These patients were applied with a calming blend for pain and inflammation which included lavender, geranium, orange, bergamot, cedarwood, vetiver, and others. The white areas on the feet show areas of extreme pain in the patient’s arthritic feet, and the slide on the right shows a vast reduction in pain in just 3 minutes after application of the blend.

33 ESSENTIAL OILS FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT
This patient was applied with a stimulating blend for pain and inflammation which included lavender, geranium, sandalwood, rosemary, basil and others. You can see the progression of the reduction in pain after only 3 minutes.

34 THERMAL IMAGING STUDY VALIDATES ESSENTIAL OILS FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT
Here’s another one showing the reduction in pain after 3 minutes.

35 ANTI-INFLAMMATORY OREGANO ESSENTIAL OIL
BETA-CARYOPHYLLIN (E-BCP) is an antioxidant E-BCP inhibits inflammation up to 70% reduction in inflammatory response E-BCP also found in Rosemary, Cinnamon, and Black Pepper Oregano contains Beta-caryophyllin (E-BCP), which is an antioxidant. Latest research shows E-BCP inhibits inflammation (up to 70 reduction in inflammatory response in one study). E-BCP also found in Rosemary, Cinnamon, and Black Pepper.

36 WINTERGREEN & PEPPERMINT
Reduce inflammatory response Pain killing properties – reduces duration and intensity of the pain

37 DEEP BLUE SOOTHING BLEND
Amazing blend exclusive to doterra and it is effective soothing pain. Deep blue has wintergreen, peppermint, and other oils in the blend. You can put it directly where you are having pain and it provides an instant soothing sensation of cooling and warmth.

38 DEEP BLUE SOOTHING BLEND
Wintergreen, Camphor, and Peppermint all have pain-killing properties. Camphor- what most people don’t realize is that there are different types of camphor. Some types can be very toxic. It produces sacrol which is toxic to the system. We use white camphor which does not have the toxin. Many companies unfortunately use brown or yellow camphor which does have that toxin.

39 DEEP BLUE SOOTHING BLEND
Blue Tansy and Blue Chamomile are soothing oils.

40 DEEP BLUE SOOTHING BLEND
And then, of course, we don’t want just the inflammation to stop, we also want the healing process to begin. Helichrysum and Osmanthus are healing oils. Osmanthus actually produces land-based omega 3 fatty acids which help to protect the Myelin Sheath of the nerve fibers, but also stimulate the body’s natural process for healing.
