Keys to understanding: What is UDL?

UDL = Universal Design for Learning Design being a key word in this concept. This is a mindset in which the learning environment is designed to promote maximum engagement.

4 Fundamentals Students fall along a continuum of learner differences Teachers should make adjustments for ALL students Curriculum materials should be varied and diverse The curriculum should be flexible to accommodate a range of learner differences.

UDL Focuses on… Multiple modes of representation (in what ways can students take in information/skill) Multiple Modes of Expression (in what ways can they demonstrate their learning and skills?) Multiple Means of Engagement (in what ways are student interests/abilities matched with they type of presentation)?

AT/UDL Relationship Assistive Technology Overcome Barriers Universal Design for Learning Reduce Barriers Taken Directly From http://www.nationaltechcenter.org/downloads/Hasselbring.ppt

AT vs UDL ATUDL Technology is focused on compensating for an individual’s needs for skills not yet developed. Technology is individual specific. Environment/ Curriculum is designed to be flexible and work interactively with AT and other supportive technology to support the students in their learning.

Some Issues with UDL – Right Now Edyburn (2010) cites several issue with UDL: There exists confusion about the role of technology in UDL…technology is essential. As UDL is about design, do teachers have time to be instructional designers? UDL is not just ‘good teaching’ nor does it occur naturally. AT should be made universally available. UDL should be scientifically evaluated.
