30.  Oct 26 1605 Robert Catesby masterminded the a plot to kill King James and establish a more Catholic friendly government.  Known as the “Gun Powder” Plot of 1605  Controversy between the Catholic citizens of England and King James.  In 1604, a peace treaty between England and Spain ended the hopes of foreign intervention on behalf of other Catholics. 33. The translating of the Douay - Rheims Bible

34.  The Douay-Rheims Bible was the first Roman Catholic translation of the Bible in English.  In 1568, an English college was established by William Allen (1532- 1594) at Douay. The college moved for a time to Rheims in 1578 under Richard Bristow (1538-1581). It was here that the translating of the Bible into English from the Latin Vulgate was finished in 1610. 43.  The 54 men chosen for the task were divided into six companies  2 at Westminster  2 at Oxford  2 at Cambridge  Though King James’s letter mentions fifty- four, the list that has been preserved contains only forty-seven. The discrepancy between the original number and the actual workers is supposed to be accounted for by resignations and deaths between the time of appointment and the time when the real work began. 45.  When the complete Bible was translated, it became a select committee of 12 men, tow from each company. In 1609, this group met daily for 9 months as the Stationer’s Hall in London. At the University, he gave himself chiefly to the Oriental tongues and to divinity  His manual for his private devotions, prepared by himself, is wholly in the Greek language. It has been translated and printed  It was said that, such was his skill in all languages, especially the Oriental, that, had he been present at the confusion of tongues at Babel, he might have served as Interpreter- General!  When he died he was fluent in 15 languages

48.  Miles Smith Known as “a walking library.” He was called by his contemporaries “an incomparable theologist.” He had studied all of the writings of the Latin and Greek church fathers, and was as well versed in Arabic, Chaldee and Syriac as he was in English. 49.  Miles Smith He was chosen by the other translators to write the Preface to the King James Bible, He wrote: “There were many chosen who were greater in other men’s eyes than their own, and who sought the truth rather than their own praise.” Miles Smith served as the final editor on the King James translation, perusing the entire text of the Bible before it went to press in 1611.
