Totalitarianism 1. Totalitarianism is a system of government where…  One party has absolute power to control every part of a society (political, economic, & cultural).  Examples of Totalitarian governments? Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Communist China, the Soviet Union, Communist North Korea, Communist Cuba

Totalitarianism 2. Totalitarian governments take control of a country…  By using the people’s unhappiness w/ the GOV while promising peace, security, & prosperity.

Totalitarianism  This is the Process to Dictatorship.  Step 1: The people dislike the current GOV.  Step 2: There is a crisis the people want solved.

Totalitarianism 3. Once in power, totalitarian governments consolidate and maintain power through…  Cult of Personality.  Regulation of the Economy.  Regulation of the State.

Totalitarianism 4. Cult of Personality:  Where a dictator uses propaganda to create a heroic image of himself, like a savior.

Totalitarianism 4. Cult of Personality:  Where a dictator uses propaganda to create a heroic image of himself, like a savior.  This is similar to hero worship & messiah complex.  The Leader is the symbol of the perfect man.  Every person models themselves after him.  Totalitarian states use film, photography, & public education to brainwash the people.

Who is this? Cult of Personalities

Who is this? Cult of Personalities

Who is this? Cult of Personalities

Who is this? Cult of Personalities

What is this? Cult of Personalities “Who is that man who appears to the toilers, Spreading happiness and joy all around? It is Stalin, I shout, so the whole world will hear, It is Stalin, our Leader and Friend.”

Totalitarianism 5. Regulation of the Economy:  GOV commands all parts of the economy.  GOV controls the means of production (industry, businesses, agriculture). Sometimes this means outright control or just requiring production quotas to be met.

Totalitarianism 5. Regulation of the Economy:  GOV commands all parts of the economy.  GOV controls the means of production (industry, businesses, agriculture). Sometimes this means outright control or just requiring production quotas to be met.  The economy gives the Leader the money & weapons to change society & conquer. Everyone has a task in the economy; everyone must complete their task for the Leader’s vision to come true.

Totalitarianism 6. Regulation of the State:  GOV controls society through censorship, brainwashing, & a secret police.

Totalitarianism 6. Regulation of the State:  GOV controls society through censorship, brainwashing, & a secret police.  Information is censored & actions are monitored.  Schools brainwash children into the Cult of Personality.  The secret police uses fear, intimidation, & violence to control your life. Any threats to GOV control are removed.

Totalitarianism 7. Totalitarianism comes in three forms…  Fascism.  As seen in Italy.  Nazism.  As seen in Germany.  Communism.  As seen in Russia.

Totalitarianism 8. Fascism is a totalitarian GOV that…  Is very nationalistic, divides society into groups w/ specific roles, & removes all those seen as “weak”.  Society should function like: a cell w/ each part given a role & controlled by the nucleus.

Totalitarianism  Regulation of the Economy: GOV tells all businesses, farms, & factories what to make & where to send it. Unlike in Communism, Fascism usually lets people still have private property.  Regulation of the State: encourages everyone to energetically work to make the country strong & united.

Totalitarianism  Regulation of the Economy: GOV tells all businesses, farms, & factories what to make & where to send it. Unlike in Communism, Fascism usually lets people still have private property.  Regulation of the State: encourages everyone to energetically work to make the country strong & united.  This ideology attacks: anyone that would weaken society & the Leader’s vision/control. Fascists target: Communists, Capitalists, the poor, & minorities (threats to control, strength, or unity).  Foreign Policy: conquest of “weaker” countries to fulfill its nation’s destiny.

Totalitarianism 9. Nazism is a totalitarian GOV that…  Is violently nationalistic, divides society into groups w/ specific roles, & commits acts of war & genocide.

Totalitarianism 9. Nazism is a totalitarian GOV that…  Is violently nationalistic, divides society into groups w/ specific roles, & commits acts of war & genocide.  German society: was a “master race” that wanted unity of all “pure” Germans to have the strength to conquer.  In this way, Nazism is a more extreme form of Fascism specifically for Germans.  Regulation of the economy & the state are the same, but Nazism is much more violent with plans of mass murder.

Totalitarianism  This ideology attacks: “undesirables” that pollute their superior genes & weakens the nation’s strength & unity. Nazis target: Communists, Capitalists, Jews, Slavic peoples, intellectuals, Gypsies, artists, criminals, and the handicapped.  Foreign Policy: conquest of “living space” from “inferior nations” while enslaving or exterminating the “weak”.

Totalitarianism 10. What can we remember about Communism & the Soviet Union? What are the differences between Fascism & Communism?

Totalitarianism 10. What can we remember about Communism & the Soviet Union? What are the differences between Fascism & Communism?  Similarities include both wanting total control, to change society according to their vision, to eliminate threats, & create a Cult of Personality.  However, Communism takes control of all property, eliminates people w/ wealth, & wants to spread revolution.  Fascism is ultra-patriotic, leaves property alone, & uses war to expand influence & eliminate anyone not apart of their nation.
