Energy Management and Policy 09/10/2004The Energy System – Current Situation and Market Trends (Part II) INDICATORS Source: IEA, 2000 Indicators measure the link between human activity and energy use Indicators show how economical and technological driving factors (energy prices, economic growth, new technologies) shape energy use and the resulting energy- related CO 2 emissions Energy indicators rely on two other types of indicators – monetary and physical – to measure two kinds of activities – economic and human Indicators are not data! They are derived from basic data on structure of economic and human activity, combined with measurements or estimates of energy use

Energy Management and Policy 09/10/2004The Energy System – Current Situation and Market Trends (Part II) INDICATORS Source: IEA, 2000 The ratio of energy per GDP measures just that – energy per GDP! The most widely used indicator can not tell much about why energy use for a given sector has reached a certain level; how efficient that use is; why levels differ so much among similar countries. Energy efficiency is a measure of the energy use per unit of activity Intensity is not exactly the inverse of energy efficiency: intensities reflect beahviour, choice, capacity or system utilisation and other factors besides just engineering ones Intensities cannot be added or aggregated, and since intensities change at different rates in different sectors, they must be viewed in a disaggregate manner
