Welcome to 3 rd Grade Curriculum Night!

Overview Curriculum guide can be found at: http://www.shakopee.k12.mn.us/Page/2804 How to use this curriculum and home support guide 3 rd grade homework policy –Approximately 10 minutes of homework per grade level –At this point, your student should read at least 15 minutes per night –Each night you should plan for at least 30 minutes total time for homework –Assignment Notebook needs to be signed and returned every day

Language Arts: Reading MAP scores and DRA testing to determine individual needs. Students will participate in reading groups at their reading level or dealing with a skill they need. Daily reading is the key to becoming a better reader.

Language Arts: Writing Students will write stories, reports, poems, and letters. Each day a lesson will be taught and time to write will be provided. Students write at their own pace. “Writer’s Notebooks” are places where we keep our ideas.

Language Arts: Word Study Students select 5 words from a list of “High Frequency” words that they didn’t know on the pretest this fall. Students will be practicing a feature skill each week. The goal is to teach students about words and how they relate; students learn patterns for a lifetime, not a list for a week. There will be a quick quiz every Friday in place of traditional Spelling test. Word Study homework will be given on Monday and is due on Friday.
