The Simple Explanation
A "normal light bulb" is also known as an incandescent light bulb. These bulbs have a very thin tungsten filament that is housed inside a glass sphere. They typically come in sizes like "60 watt," "75 watt," "100 watt" and so on. The basic idea behind these bulbs is simple. Electricity runs through the filament. Because the filament is so thin, it offers a good bit of resistance to the electricity, and this resistance turns electrical energy into heat. The heat is enough to make the filament white hot, and the "white" part is light. The filament glows because of the heat -- it incandesces The problem with incandescent light bulbs is that the heat wastes a lot of electricity. Heat is not light, and the purpose of the light bulb is light, so all of the energy spent creating heat is a waste. Incandescent bulbs are therefore very inefficient. They produce perhaps 15 lumens per watt of input power.

Watts – Power, how much power is used.
Lumens – unit of measurement for light, 1 lumen = 1 candle within 2 square feet Watts – Power, how much power is used. So efficiency would be how much light you get for how much power, the more light and less power you use, the more efficient the bulb.

Incandescent Bulbs Produces light with a wire filament heated to a high temperature. Can range from volts. Turn less than 5% of the energy used into light, the other being converted to heat. Typical life-span is around 1000 hours. Bulbs mainly used for heat lights for reptiles and incubators.
12
Fluorescent Tube Low pressure mercury-vapour gas discharge. Electric current “excites” mercury-vapour producing ultraviolet light that causes phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb to glow. Electric current “excites” mercury-vapour phosphor coating glows light is produced. Much more efficient than incandescent bulb converting most energy into light. Typical life-span is around 10,000 hours.
13
Halogen Light Bulbs An incandescent tube that has bromine or iodine added. With the halogen (gas) and tungsten (filament) together a chemical cycle occurs. The reaction places evaporated tungsten back onto the filament. Because of this, its life cycle increases due to the recyclable/reoccurring chemical reaction. Can operate at high temperatures. Small size light, can be found in projectors and car lights.
14
Diode and P-N Junction A diode is a two terminal electric component with asymmetric conductance, has a low resistance to current in one direction and high resistance to another. A boundary between two types of semiconductor material, p-type and n-type. By doping (intentionally placing impurities into a pure substance to modify electrical properties)
15
Light-Emitting Diode (LED)
Two lead semiconductor light source. Has a basic p-n junction diode, which emits light when activated. Can be used in infarred, visible and ultraviolet light wavelengths. Have a low energy consumption, longer lifetime, smaller size. Typical life-span is around 50,000 hours. Used in traffic lights, destination displays for trains, buses, trams and ferries.
16
Energy Saver Fluorescent Bulb
Also called compact fluorescent bulb (CFL). Converts 20-33% to light energy. Has the same methods of energy as fluorescent bulb. Electric current “excites” mercury-vapour phosphor coating glows light is produced. Typical life span ranges from 8,000 – 15,000 hours. Some uses are in lamps and recreational vehicles (neon glow).
