the modern University was founded in 1973 The University of Rijeka consists of institutions working in three regions: Istria, Primorje and Lika, situated in the cities of Rijeka, Pula, Opatija and Gospić. University authorities: - Senate - Rector - co-ordinates activities of the faculties - Vice-rectors for: research and international co- operation, teaching and student affairs, finance, and for organisation and postgraduate studies About the University I

University of Rijeka is a state-funded university under the authority of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports. About 60% of the total income is financed by the Ministry, 38% comes from the University’s own activities (mainly fees) and 2% of the income comes from other sources About the University II

Total number of students in the academic year 2004/05 18,099 (12,959 full-time & 5,140 part-time) + 589 postgraduate students 927 full-time teachers & staff of 616 The University of Rijeka is presently comprised of: - 10 faculties + 1 Accademy of Applied Arts - 3 Teachers' Schools of Professional Higher Education - 3 University Libraries, and - Students' Centre Rijeka and its branch in Pula 23 departments, 111 chairs, 27 institutes and one research centre all through 181 scientific research units. By the end of 2004, 51.819 undergraduate students, 1.159 graduate students and 578 Ph.D. students obtained their degrees. The University members are engaged in 123 national and international projects. The University is currently involved in a 16.5 million USD worth investment project aiming at improving the quality of life at the University, as well as the services offered to students and visiting professors. Center for academic affairs Organizational unit that is responsible for organization, implementation and development of studies at the University of Rijeka. Tasks of the Center (its director, board of experts and its secretary) are: taking measures for regular carrying out of studies established by the University itself; coordinating activities for establishment of joint studies; evaluation of existing study programs and estimation of proposals for new ones; taking care of the enrolment policy and procedure; reviewing efficiency of the teaching process and suggests measures for their improvement; Immediate responsibility is to produce an ID card for each member of the University of Rijeka

Quality assurance Quality assurance system at the University of Rijeka reflects the awareness of the academic community of the importance of quality in higher education and the University’s aspiration to become successfully integrated into European Higher Education Area.

Strategy of the quality assurance at the University of Rijeka Encouraging regular discussions about quality and spreading quality culture throughout academic and wider community; Developing, organizing and carrying out evaluation and self-evaluation actions needed for exploring different aspects of the quality of education and for focusing on different target groups (students, teachers, administrative staff, executive staff, employers and general public); Providing constant inflow of feedback from students, ensuring that their comments, suggestions and reviews are acknowledged; Defining quality standards and criteria at the University of Rijeka; Developing in-house mechanisms (actions) for quality assurance and improvement; Securing effective implementation of the in-house mechanisms for quality assurance and advancement at the member institutions’ level; Encouraging and ensuring personnel development – enabling teaching, executive and administrative staff with opportunities for professional development.
